This is one of those books where enjoyment and quality aren't on the same line. The book is great fun, although not extremely well written or original. It's just... very good fun. Great young-adult literature, for sure. This is one of those books where enjoyment and quality aren't on the same line. The book is great fun, although not extremely well written or original. Really enjoyed the 2nd book in the Riftwar series, interesting concept and I like the way the author spun the story.

I first read this book in high school and I think this book is actually a good option for YA fantasy readers, and also holds up well for pure fantasy readers, too. Things I liked: fast moving story, some really fascinating concepts, has a very satisfying ending, characters were developed more than I expected Things I didn't like: my biggest criticism was that the story moved too fast in places which took something away from the characters and the cool ideas (the storylines ended so quickly). Also, I think too much time was spent with lesser interesting characters (i.e. Laurie and even Arutha at times). All things said, this almost reads like a movie more than a novel, which had its pros and cons for me.. If you are on the fence I recommend you read it, you won't regret it. I enjoyed it. Content (important for me so including for those interested): virtually no sexual content (characters spend the night together but that's pretty much the extent), violence is not gratuitous.

This is the 2nd book of 4 in the Riftwar series. I liked the first book a lot and like this one a little bit better. It starts off where Apprentice leaves off. Pug is now a slave in another world and Tomas is struggling with a power that can overtake him. The war continues and no one sees it ending anytime soon. I enjoyed this book better than the Magician Apprentice, but really the two books don't stand alone, this one is needed for closure. I really enjoyed his character development, they seemed alive. However his use of magic and resolution of problems bothered me. Interesting story and concepts. Feist's writing really matured in the course of this series. I would almost suggest readers start with this book to taste the full potential of the world he has crafted. Started an omnibus, but the first novel in the series was too dull to finish, so I didn't actually get to the start of this one. This author is not for me. Not a single positive female character in the entire book. All women are slaves, wives, stupid idiots or promising child bearers. But an otherwise good story.

This was better when I was younger. It was a good read and very enjoyable, but seemed a bit too simplistic as I've aged. I still enjoy the characters, situation and world-building, but the depth just didn't seem to be there. Probably my favorite character was Thomas and while his story is probably the most fleshed out, even his resolution appeared a bit too convenient. Still recommended because it's a fun read and very entertaining. But.... This was better when I was younger. It was a good read and very enjoyable, but seemed a bit too simplistic as I've aged. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Listening to the audio book, I had trouble keeping up with names. If I can't spell it, I have trouble grasping and keeping up with who's who. For example, the S people -on the other side of the rift, the ones that named pug differently- I I cannot begin to say or spell their name. I named them specifically because I felt like that part of the book lacked the memorable gravitas of earlier sections, although I cannot say exactly where or how. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. The prelude of a lifelong journey and beloved characters. "Fictional history" is the best term to describe these events; thus, it stands in contrast to J.R.R. Tolkien's mythological approach.
