What a delightful little book! I've read several reviews where the reviewer complained about the overt hit-you-over-the-head religious message hammered into your brain, but I totally did not get that. I'm not a very religious person, so maybe I'm just clueless. But I very much enjoyed the story, and even the writing. I have the entire series (I think, it ends with book 7, right?) and look forward to them all. And I'll admit, reading this made me want to see the movie again. What a delightful little book! But since Aslan--the noble lion--has returned to the land, the queen's evil winter may be over. Unfortunately, Edmund is still bewitched by her and runs away to inform her, and before long, Aslan and his troops must face the queen's forces in battle, with Edmund's life hanging in the balance. The effectiveness of ultimate sacrifice may depend on who really knows the laws of the land. This one is the most obvious of the Christianity-inspired stories--it's full of Jesus imagery, and there are multiple themes of sin, redemption, honor, bravery, and sacrifice. The writing is pretty straightforward and readable, though there are little voices whispering throughout that children are supposed to learn life lessons here. (I find that to be very distracting and makes it less enjoyable.) I liked that Aslan knew more about the magical laws of the universe than the White Witch did. The ending made me wonder how the children's adventure in Narnia actually would have affected them psychologically, since they spend many years there but emerge from the wardrobe as children again.

A highly condensed version of the story that still captures so much of its essence, and with such beautiful imagery! I wish I could hang up all the pages as decoration!
