THE LANTERN BOATS an utterly gripping and heart-breaking historical novel set in post-war Japan (Historical Fiction Standalones)

Overall 3.5*
Much as I liked the blurb for the book and thought it would be interesting, there were times especially in the first half which for me were just too slow and I almost lost interest in the book. I really like the history behind it and all that was happening in and around Japan post WW2 but there were a couple of things which didn't add up for me ( don't want to say as it would give part of the plot away!), hence 3.5*. It is still worth a read especially if you are interested in Orient Overall 3.5*

Disappointing
I usually enjoy books of this genre and this locale, but I found The Lantern Boats disappointing. While the character development and the writing were pretty solid, the storyline was disjointed. I was left with a lot of questions and really disliked the so-called ending. Perhaps I just prefer stand-alone books. Unfortunately, so many books on offer these days seem to be part of a series. I really resent having to buy another book in order find out “what happens next”.
