I Am in Bed With You

Availability: Ready to download

Playful and fluid but completely serious, Emma Barnes’s surreal phantasmagoria I Am in Bed with You leads us through the very personal worlds of sex, gender and the body. Barnes cracks jokes, makes us uncomfortable, shows us a little tenderness, leaves a lot unsaid and does it all with language that provokes and confounds.

Every line in these poems is sharp as a diamond razor. And the lines fit together perfectly into these tightly wound little machines. So the end result is a perfectly contained cube of whirring blades. It’s beautiful and queer and emotional. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt more seen by a book.

This book gave me so many feelings that I had to take it slow in the first section often reading then re-reading. Then there was the Sigourney Weaver worm hole situation. Then I devoured the last section. So absolutely smoking hot. “I know that love is a conversation and I have been talking to myself alone in an empty room.” “I accidentally fantasise about your fingers inside me.” “To look into you is to see myself in another life both backwards and forwards like a spinning top changes direction lik This book gave me so many feelings that I had to take it slow in the first section often reading then re-reading.
