Those two stories were extremely unusual and frightening. In the first one you'll meet a demon specialized on road kill and some sacrifices. Should you help someone injured or better move on? The main character learns the hard way. In Motel Madness you'll see a middle aged teacher who had an accident? What or better asked why did the accident happened and at what price? Demmer has an uncanny ability to illicit true dread within an extraordinarily short number of pages. I have never seen anyone do it better. The first story has a modern Lovecraftian vibe, while the second made me desperately want to rewatch Beetlejuice! Take from that what you will. With all this being said, not only do I recommend this double dose of horror, I also highly recommend you check out his other works. I absolutely loved The Sea Was a Fair Master, The Town That Feared Dusk and Dark Celebrations and I think you will too!!!

In the first, an entity that reflects your worst experiences while scaring you with its monstrous form collects suffering bodies from the road. A suburban street cleaner with a vengeance. In the second story, a woman wakes up in a skewed motel where nothing seems real but the nightmares she witnesses. Is there any escape? Or is justice just around an invisible corner? 4.5/5 Earlier this year, I read the excellent Anthology, Double Barrel Horror Vol. 3. Within was featured two new Calvin Demmer shorts. A few days ago, he reached out to ask if I’d be keen to revisit the two stories featured in the Anthology, as they were being packaged together as a stand alone release. ABSOLUTELY. What I liked: Both stories are quick reads, the page count totaling about 30 when all is said and done. Saying that, Demmer packs a ton of story into these pages. You’ll already know that if you’ve read his stunning releases ‘The Sea Was a Fair Master’ or ‘Dark Celebrations.’ ‘Highway Hunger’ opens up the duology with a story that follows a man doing probation work along a stretch of highway. When they come across an injured animal, his colleague quickly informs him they need to leave and quick. From here, Demmer delivers a brutal story of an unknown inhabitant that rules the blacktop. Loved it. (5/5) ‘Motel Madness’ is just that. The second story here throws us into the deep end and we get to watch as things unravel quickly. Demmer decides to forego any sense of breathing space for the reader and instead creates a nightmare induced landscape, all within the confines of a singular room. (4/5) As I said before, Demmer is such a master at crafting a story with as few words as possible, that you’ll feel like you’ve ingested a 300 page novel, all in a tenth of the page count. What I didn’t like: Interestingly, I could always spout off word for word ‘Highway Hunger’ as though I had just read it, but ‘Motel Madness’ felt completely new and foreign. I remember enjoying the story the first time, but it is one that definitely didn’t stick around in my head. I think if this one could’ve had a touch more description on the why of some of the actions earlier, it wouldn’t feel so congested. Why you should buy this: I’ve said it a thousand times, but one more won’t hurt – Calvin Demmer very well may be the greatest short story teller of our time. When all is said and done, they’ll be studying his work for decades. He doesn’t waste any words and gives us the meat and potatoes of each story. It is always a stunning experience reading his work and Demmer is absolutely a writer who is teaching me how to better tell a story, each time I read his work. This is a perfect introduction for new fans, but a worthy addition for current fans. Definitely recommend you get on this!

Earlier this year I read Calvin Demmers’s short story collection Dark Celebrations. I really enjoyed it and jumped at the chance to read more of his work. Highway Hunger and Motel Madness are two very unique, creepy shorts. They’re absolutely perfect for spooky season so go grab yourself a copy. These two short stories are a quick and creepy good time. In Highway Hunger a court ordered community service gig is more than just a punishment as one man comes face to face with a road demon. In Motel Madness a woman awakens in a strange room with no memory of how she arrived or what has happened to her traveling companions. Both stories share an underlying theme of revenge and retribution with a bit of dark humor thrown in. I received a complimentary copy for review.

4.5 Stars. This collection by Calvin Demmer contained two stories: "Highway Hunger", and "Motel Madness". Each of these had great atmosphere, writing (in general), and characters that you wanted to read more about. Since the stories are shorter, I won't go into details, only say that they are BOTH worth reading--and re-reading. I gave a personal rating of 4 stars to the first tale, and 5 to the second. Calvin Demmer returns, doing what he does best, with two short stories. He doesn’t have long to impress with these, but he manages it, again. Highway Hunger is the tale of Dudley, a dude out doing his community service which involves clearing the fresh roadkill from the highway. He finds a squirrel on the asphalt and a pang of guilt emerges as he realises this poor creature is still alive. Just before he’s able to rescue the little guy or at least put him out of his misery, his co-worker yells at Calvin Demmer returns, doing what he does best, with two short stories. Highway Hunger is the tale of Dudley, a dude out doing his community service which involves clearing the fresh roadkill from the highway. He finds a squirrel on the asphalt and a pang of guilt emerges as he realises this poor creature is still alive. Just before he’s able to rescue the little guy or at least put him out of his misery, his co-worker yells at him to leave it alone. You see, in these here parts, those creatures that lie on or beside the road that aren’t quite dead, are the property of the road demon. This beast makes itself known to all those that need to know. And when you see it, well, the air changes and things become weird. Does this demon also claim ownership of people who may have been injured, say in a car accident or something? Now, that would be telling. Part 2 in this horror duo is Motel Madness, my favourite of the pair. Tallulah wakes in a cheap and seedy motel room with no memory of how she got there. Her mind is hazy but she does remember she was driving three students to a pageant competition. Suddenly her mind plays tricks, showing her terrible images of the girls with shocking injuries. Doors appear then disappear, body parts materialise, and Tallulah begins to question whether she’s actually losing her mind. I can’t say too much more. The premise was kind of obvious but the ending was something I hadn’t seen coming. This story plays out like a nightmare where nothing is as it seems and the situation is simply one of no escape. This offering would be perfect for Demmer newbies, but why stop here? Check out everything he has to offer, you can thank me later!

Highway Hunger is a clever short story by Calvin Demmer that had a Lovecraftian feel to it. The story follows a man named Dudley who is working community service hours by cleaning up roadkill. He works with a seasoned crew man, Felipe, who forbids Dudley from assisting any injured (but still living) thing on the highway. He insists that Dudley leave any living thing behind for the Road Demon. The Road Demon is a creature that once you see it with your own eyes, you are never the same. He insists that Dudley leave any living thing behind for the Road Demon. The Road Demon is a creature that once you see it with your own eyes, you are never the same. Dudley must decide for himself whether this is just folklore or something he should truly be mindful of. While this story was not overly creepy for me, it was pretty interesting and I could see this Road Demon manifesting itself in an infinite number of ways. I also liked the Lovecraftian vibes. The second story in the bundle is Motel Madness. I think this is probably one of my favorite short stories I’ve ever read. It starts out with a really unsettling nightmarish atmosphere. Tallulah is in a motel room that she doesn’t remember checking into, and she’s all alone. There is no way for her to know where she is as there are no windows and no doors that open to the outside. She’s concerned not only about her own whereabouts, but also that of three young ladies she was driving to a beauty pageant (as their coach). They were not in the room with her. Soon enough, she is visited by the motel’s owner and learns more about how she ended up in this motel and what this place has in store for her. I don’t want to give anything away, but man, this story was an amazing concept to me. It’s a tale about finding silver linings and could also be seen as a tale of redemption. And oh, what horrible things might be in store for the people who really deserve them!

Highway Hunger was a unique tale about a road kill crew & a cosmic horror-type monster with an appetite for the almost-dead. Motel Madness takes us to a creepy personal hell, with a twist. Don’t plan a road trip or a roadside motel stay anytime before or shortly after reading these short stories. This is “roadkill/trip” horror without a seatbelt. In Highway Hunger the first story in this collection a court ordered community service worker is assigned to pick up roadkill on the side of the road and gets more than he bargained for in the process. More like road-demon than road-kill. In Motel Madness a young lady awakes in a strange motel room unaware of how she got there and caught in a nightmare of a situation. These two stories were presented in an earlier anthology entitled “Double-Barrel Horror: Volume 3” which I read, but make no mistake these stories were well worth the second read.
