Saints is the first book in Sophia Henry’s Saints and Sinners duet, and I have rather mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed it enough to devour it in a single sitting, but it didn’t quite blow my mind in the way I had hoped it would. I think part of the reason I wasn’t crazy about this one is due to my expectations with mafia romances. I expect rather dark reads, and this one did not feel all that dark to me. It was interesting – I adored that we were given a story set in the location and time we were, providing us with something different – but it did not shock me in the way I like to be shocked by mafia romances. Don’t get me wrong, I was curious to see how everything played out. There were multiple elements I was interested in, with there being more to the story than I’d expected. However, I felt like it was a lot of moments spread out across time and that stopped me from being sucked in deep and experiencing all the emotions of the story. Saints certainly had me hooked and has me curious about the second book, but it didn’t quite wow me in the way I had hoped.

Sexy, suspenseful, with hints of delicious darkness, SINNERS has all the drama and sensuality of a top-notch mafia romance. Henry makes 1990s Russia come alive with incredibly researched detail, making the story feel very real. The hockey angle was fresh and smart, too, adding an unexpected angle of danger and suspense. I devoured this book and the follow up, SAINTS - the characters and story were just that good. Can't recommend this duet enough! Stasya and Kirill are a great dramatic couple of characters. I loved the up and down dynamic between them! The chemistry between the main characters was really hot! The ups and downs are so prevalent that it spurs the story on. It is very entertaining. This is not a extremely dark read, but it isn't a fluffy romantic comedy either. I highly recommend this story for anyone who likes Mafia or sports romances. Stasya and Kirill are a great dramatic couple of characters. I loved the up and down dynamic between them! I loved this couple! It was interesting having the book take place during '80's and reading about the unstable era of Russia. Now, I've got to get my hands on the next book. I loved this couple! Sophia Henry’s Saints (Saints and Sinners Duet #1) is a phenomenal read. Anastasiya (Stasya) Mikhailovna Kratsova’s life was turned upside down when her twin brother defects from Moscow to play hockey in America. She is now wanted by the Russian mob in an attempt to extort her brother. Rival mob leader, Kirill Antonov offers her protection if she becomes his. This sports/mob romance is suitable for adult readers. This is one of those novels for me upon its conclusion; I was left speechless. This sports/mob romance is suitable for adult readers. This is one of those novels for me upon its conclusion; I was left speechless. The only word I could think of was “wow." This was an amazing book. It’s cliffhanger ending is making me highly anticipate book two, Sinners. I beyond loved this story. The title of the duet is perfect. I loved the explanation in the story. I really enjoyed the political aspect of the novel. Both of my parents were born in Hungary. I have been there numerous times and found it interesting to witness how much the country has changed from a communist, to a socialist, to a democratic parliamentary republic. Sophia Henry does an amazing job displaying the change Russia goes through in the late eighties and early nineties. My dad used to help people defect from Hungary, so I appreciated Kirill. Kirill is a fantastic character. He has an interesting past. He has noble intention. He can be fierce but also sweet when it comes to Stasya. Stasya is a compelling heroine. She has been through a lot. She is strong and talented. The two have amazing chemistry. I have always enjoyed Sophia Henry’s books. She is a talented writer. She outdid herself with this book. I recommend Saints (Saints and Sinners Duet #1) to people who enjoy sports and mob romances. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader's copy of this book.

    >Book Review – Saints >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Saints and Sinners Duet and ends in a cliffhanger. Stasya is living in post-communist Russia. He kidnaps her in order to save her from someone worse kidnapping her. Why didn’t he just talk to her? She was injured during his kidnapping, which goes against Kirill’s feeling of devotion and protectiveness towards Stasya. >Kirill is getting involved in legit businesses in the USA. Why he keeps Stasya in Moscow and doesn’t take her to the US is confusing. Kirill doesn’t have any type of backstory involving previous relationships. His true romantic motivation towards Stasya is not clear, nor is it very romantic. Stasya is very sheltered, yet once she is in a relationship with Kirill, she spends time with him at strip joints and has questionable women over to her home with Kirill. These women are brought by Kirill’s Bratva men and paraded in Stasya’s home. She never bats an eye at any of this, which seems out of character. >This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the book 3 stars. There are a lot of character development issues that need to be resolved in order for the story to be more believable. I like the writing style and the plot idea, but the story as a whole needs more work.

I am amending my review after the author reached out to me. My initial 1 star review was based on thinking that the author didn't understand the difference/importance of Red instead of an editorial choice based on copyright laws. I can completely understand wanting to avoid that by creating a fictionalized team name. I hope that she does add a note explaining this because it would have made a huge difference to my enjoyment of the book. I have enjoyed her Pilots hockey series and will continue to read her work. - Original review: Aside from disliking the characters which is a personal thing. My major problem with the book is that she kept using Scarlet for Red when referring to the Central Red Army hockey team and anywhere you would historically see Red used when referring to the Soviet Union's Army or anything else related. Scarlet and Red are not interchangeable and Red is not a pejorative. It is an historic name with it's roots in the color of the flag and name for the communist side from the Russian revolution.

Russia, circa 1989… part one of a duet I enjoyed this suspenseful story set in Moscow, 1989, along with the depiction of the political and cultural impacts on the common, working man. While state-provided wares are few and far between, the mafia-run Black Market is thriving. Everyone wants the American dream, but only a lucky few will acquire a pair of worn Levi’s if they have something good to barter with. Stasya’s always known hardship, but her life becomes precarious after her brother defects to play hockey in the U.S.A. Suddenly she’s on everyone’s radar including the KGB and rival mafia gangs. When she agrees to protection from one of the gang leaders, how will she react when she discovers the depth of his deception? This is a well written story with engaging characters. There’s plenty of drama, secrets, conflict, brutality and violence, plus several steamy encounters. I look forward to the conclusion of this duet. Stasya and Kirill are a great dramatic couple of characters. I loved the up and down dynamic between them! The chemistry between the MCs was really hot! The ups and downs are so prevalent that it spurs the story on. It is very entertaining. This is not a extremely dark read, but it isn't a fluffy romantic comedy either.
