4.5 stars This is a story of tradition, legacy and revenge, as a young woman fights for her right to the crown. I've read several books by this author, mostly on the lighter side of romance, so I was genuinely curious how her foray into the fantasy world would be. As you can see from my rating, it was a worthy risk on her part. While I'm no stranger to the fantasy genre, I sometimes struggle with the complex world building. Thankfully, that is not a key element in this story. Yes, the kingdoms in 4.5 stars This is a story of tradition, legacy and revenge, as a young woman fights for her right to the crown. As you can see from my rating, it was a worthy risk on her part. While I'm no stranger to the fantasy genre, I sometimes struggle with the complex world building. Thankfully, that is not a key element in this story. Yes, the kingdoms in this book are not real, but the story itself is easy to follow and added to my own personal enjoyment. Tessana "Tess" Allisand escaped her home in Elysia eight years ago, following the slaughter of her entire royal family. Hidden away in a monastery in Heprin, she has bided her time to return to her homeland. When one of the Fathers presents her with the family crown, she long thought destroyed, she knew it was time and had the weight of possibilities on her shoulders. Could she become Queen of the Realm? The cards were stacked against her from the get-go. Tess and her friend, Oliver, do not seem well equipped for this large voyage, facing one obstacle after another. But while under capture by the Rebel Army, she strikes up a friendship of sorts with one of their leaders, Arrick Westnovian. I had my suspicions about him, and I'm wondering why Tess didn't see the signs that were so obvious to me. Nevertheless, he proves to become a key ally and her protector during her travels. Since her departure years prior, the kingdom of Elysia has been ruled by her uncle, Tyrn Fennick, who I hated immediately. Desperate to remain in power, I didn't doubt that this man would do everything possible to keep his seat at the crown. And it was clear some darker elements were at play. While this book only hints at those elements, I expect they will become a bigger part of the story in the next installment. I'm eager to see whether Tess has the ability to rise up against her enemies. If you are looking for a new fantasy series, this is worth checking out. *An ARC was received for an honest review. I was excited to read something in the fantasy genre from her since I've been gravitating in that direction in the past year or so. The book cover, trailer, and synopsis really pulled me in and snagged my curiosity, all hinting at a strong female protagonist who must overcome dark magical forces to reclaim her kingdom. The writing and worldbuilding are very easy to slip into. Sometimes fantasies-especially the first in a series and feel dry and dense as you weed through the characters and backstory of the kingdom(s). Thankfully, that wasn't the case here because in my current frame of mind I need stories that are effortless. Tessana Allisand is an orphaned princess living in seclusion inside a silent monastery. Forced to flee after her entire family was massacred, she's been biding her time in hiding until she's old enough to return and claim what's rightfully hers. Unsure of who was behind the murder of her family, it wasn't safe for her to remain in her kingdom where unknown forces would plot to finish the job they started. The monks are eternally exasperated with her independent, rule-bending side, but she has become a very special member of the holy family. Stern Father Garius shows the depth of his feelings for her when he breaks his vow of silence to encourage her to make the dangerous journey home to convince her kingdom to crown her the first queen in a land that has always passed to kings. "You are Tessana Allisand of the House of Extentia, daughter of Fredrix, King of Elysia and Ruler of the Realm. You are a princess. You are a survivor. And now you will take the crown back to your people and show them that you are still alive.” Tess makes the journey with her friend Oliver, a bit naively thinking that she's prepared to face the hardships that are in front of her. After being sheltered for so long, she lacks the knowledge of the challenges that are in front of her during the long trek. It doesn't take long before she meets Arrick, a rebel leader hell bent on not letting her out of his sight. At first she can't quite peg the guy. After capturing Oliver and herself, he's oddly reasonable in releasing them and returning their belongings. Not only that, but he's insistent on accompanying them to protect them from the Traveling Horde and The Ring of Shadows. These are violent mercenary groups who a real threat to her safety, and her training in self-defense won't amount to much when surrounded by the sheer numbers on the opposing side. He's willing to shield her from these forces who may want to do her harm and expects nothing in return, yet Tess stubbornly and proudly tries to deny their help. I found that to be somewhat foolish because she needed all the help she could get. Her pride outweighed common sense because there is no possible way she should take on the risk of traveling alone when she has an offer of help in unfamiliar territory. She's on a quest to prove that she's capable of being her kingdom's first queen, and at this point she isn't quite there yet. Arrick was clearly a "good guy" right from the start despite being a rebel leader who is seen as a criminal by most. From the first introduction, it's easy to deduce that he means her no harm...at least it was for me. There is a twist involving Arrick which I must admit was 100% predictable based on the amount of foreshadowing given to the reader. Personally, I feel as if we are almost beat over the head with a continuous barrage of hints that neutralize any mystery that could have been there. When the reveal finally comes, the heroine is dumbfounded that she was so blind to the truth. The fact that it seemed so glaringly obvious only serves to make the heroine appear completely oblivious and witless. Is this the young girl that's going to inspire confidence in overturning patriarchal traditions? I do realize that she doesn't need to be perfect, don't get me wrong. There is room for character growth here, and she does grow in confidence by the end of the book as she experiences more of the real world. I just wish that the twist had been more subtle so it could have been more effective. After returning home, the real fight begins as she must produce the missing Crown of Nine that she's been protecting and prove her identity to those who thought she had died. As if that's not bad enough, her uncle is clearly not thrilled at their family reunion and challenges the validity of her claims. If she is unable to prove herself beyond a shadow of a doubt, she could pay the ultimate price-her life. She lays everything on the line for the good of her people in the hopes that she can root out the evil at the source of the royal assassination. Why three stars? For me this isn't a bad rating, although many see it that way. Three means that I enjoyed it, but I just didn't love it or find anything plot-wise that stands apart from the rest. Maybe it was the fact that I've read other books with similar plot points this year. For me, it was like a combination of Shielded by KayLynn Flanders and the Crown of Shards series by Jennifer Estep. It was just a little predictable for my taste, but having said that, the book was by no means bad. The romance was sweet and promises to deepen in the installments to come. I liked Tess a lot overall, and though she had her faults, I respected her and found it easy to root for her up until the end. She's a young woman willing to fight against all odds and risk her life for the well being of not just herself, but her people. Her unselfish actions coupled with her courage in returning to the nightmare of her childhood makes her a worthy heroine. I will be interested to see where Rachel Higginson takes the series as many questions are left unanswered. If you're looking for a straightforward fantasy with a strong romance, this could be the book for you. I could not ignore the purpose that had been given to me the second I saw the crown again. I could not ignore the call to fate that had led me this far. I could not ignore that I had been born into a bloodline that belonged to the Seat of Power as much as the Crown of Nine belonged to it. I devoured it so fast and it was so good!! It had everything I love in a fantasy. The lost princess trope and her old story with her betrothal, gave me the romance I desired. Also, her friendship with Oliver was just perfect and let's not forget all the animal companions 😍😍 There were some intense scenes and maybe some predictable stuff that happened, but they didn't take anything from my reading pleasure 🙌🏻 Definitely recommend it ❤️

It has been some time since I read a YA fantasy story, but being as it’s Higginson doing the authoring, I was all in. And let me tell you a little something...it was so absolutely fantastic. Higginson picked right back up with this genre like there was no time lost since she last penned one. She delved back in and wrote it, owned it and delivered it. She gave CROWN OF ONE HUNDRED KINGS the perfect amount of fantasy, romance and intrigue to keep my heart happy and my mind content. High fantasy is very much a hit-or-miss for me. The elaborate storytelling and complicated set-up can be hard for me to settle into. Truly, I think the writing was my favorite thing about this book. I appreciated the attention to detail over the course of Tessana's travels, but I am a sucker for character driven novels and so - for me - the dialogue is where the sweet spot was here. My goodness, it was so much fun to read! I'm hard pressed to say whether I loved Tessana's adorable friendship with the incorrigible Oliver more? Or the simmering chemistry and sparky banter she shared with Taelon. In either case, or in all cases, there was so much to love about the way these characters were written, and how they interacted with each other. It kept it real to me. And, of course, it made me care so much for these characters. There's a lot of set-up in this book, which isn't unusual for this genre. It dragged a little in spots for me, but in other spots it held my attention completely as my eager brain greedily ate up these words, dying to know what happened next, and enjoying every second of the adventure! And it was an adventure - one that's not over yet. I suspect it's only begun. There are a lot of loose ends that have not been wrapped up and my heart doesn't really know what to think of everything right now. I'm nervous and excited to see where the story goes from here, but I'm so happy to be on this journey with this wonderful cast of characters! ~ Shelly, 4 stars

She is 17, has no army or anything to protect herself, but is adamant to confront the current King. Both Tess and the hero (I assume he is the love interest) are not really fleshed out. They are young, beautiful/handsome but nothing special as of yet. Just being a princess does not make you special. The story is kind of a fairy tale about a lost princess trying to claim her Kingdom and encountering the evil uncle/King. Nothing unpredictable and no shocking twists in this book but that might change in book 2 and 3 of this trilogy. So, I am looking forward to the next! *** I received an ARC from the author for which I am thankful but this is my honest and voluntary review. ***

I have been waiting for Rachel to write another fantasy series since falling in love with her Star-Crossed one years ago! The level of detail in world building she creates is absolutely phenomenal, and I especially like how she writes characters who are young but not juvenile (if that makes sense). Loved the pace of the book, the character interactions, and the overall storyline. Can't wait for book two! (Big thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.) High- fantasy is one of my favourite genres of books, mainly because it transfers the reader to a whole other world where the rules tend to be quite different from the rules we live by in the daily life. Twisted and turned and shaping a whole different world in which the reader is immersed, living the life of the characters he/she is reading about. And quite an escape from the ordinary world we are all used to. World building and setting are two things I focus the most when reading fantasy and high fantasy. Being a whole different world, the details must not only be appealing and interesting, but they should make sense and seem natural to the world described in the book. A world without logic is a world that lacks, regardless if it is fantasy or not. All the little details put into the creation of the world and plot should grow up in equilibrium and in a logical matter. In this way, the world seems real to the reader, and not forced or having to deal with plot holes that make the reader question the ability of the author to create a relevant world that would actually make sense. “Crown of one hundred kings” displays a high fantasy world that is rich and mainly logical, the build up is constant, the set up of the world has a lot of details and plotting and I can only appreciate that because it’s one of the things that draws me closer to a book. I love the work that is put in the details, in the building of the fantasy world and the rich sense of adding up to shape a solid setting. Adding up to this, a second thing I really liked in the book was the writing. I am a huge fan of a creative and detailed narrative that embraces the reader with the style of writing. The action is rich and also enriched with the style of writing that envelops the reader deeper into the world. I love a writing style that is warm and rich, filled with description, that shows emotion towards and between the characters, and also shows a display of love between the author and what he/she created. It is much similar to showing somebody a thing that you love and enjoy doing. This is how the process of creating this fantasy world filled with action, plot and characters should look like. Like the author truly enjoyed the work on her own. And what I can say about “Crown of one hundred kings” is that you can tell that the book was written with feeling and emotional investment. The characters should look and feel like real people, even as displayed in a fantasy world. Tess, the main character of the story, is an orphan taking a quest to regain her birth right to be the one standing on the throne. So from the start there is a heavy burden on her shoulders that she should be deemed and prove to be able to claim. It is the display of a strong main character, put through hardship, a premise usual to the entire high fantasy genre meant to help grow both the world and the character along with the story. I loved the relationships between characters, being friendship or romantic interest, the interactions between them were adorable and the sparks were real. Just as in a real life situations, they didn’t seem forced or meant to express more than they were actually supposed to. The sense of adventure is something that should never miss in a fantasy world and this book was filled with adventures and quests, of one thing adding up to another and the narrative being build up on the next action that would be made. Everything building up to more and more and developing a complex plot that keeps the reader hooked on the story and curious to know what happens next. And to where things will end up based on the plot and character decisions, on hardships and future events happening in the world. As a conclusion, I recommend this book especially to fantasy and high fantasy lovers, to readers loving a detailed world building and rich set ups, strong characters and epic battles, taking in a world filled with fantasy and intriguing plots that lead to a flow of dashing events.

I'm a huge fan of Rachel Higginson, so once I saw that she was going to release a YA fantasy trilogy, I was absolutely on board. And there's just a little bit of romance to keep my romance lovin' self going. I thought Rachel did a great job with the world-building, there were a couple of times where I blanked out a little bit, but that's what tends to happen to me when I read high fantasy. However, I was able to follow along effortlessly and understood what happened with Tessana's family and what she has to face to claim what's rightfully hers. Ah Tessana, I really enjoyed this heroine, she's a rather fierce character. She's not afraid to go after anything, I'll admit she doesn't always think things through, but she's still only 17. I can't wait to see her character develop as the series go on. I LOVED her friendship with Oliver, those two are almost like siblings and their banter was comical. And then we have Taelon, we know their story right from the very beginning and I'm just eager to see what will grow between these two. They have the chemistry and their connection is something you'll see immediately. And he's such a likable character! Rachel wrote such a solid foundation for this trilogy, setting everything up. Tess will be facing a lot of barriers before she can claim the crown, I'm a little nervous about it all because there's a lot working against her. She has so much growing to do, but I know it'll be an epic adventure. CHECK OUT THE REST OF MY REVIEW | HERE BLOG | INSTAGRAM | AMAZON | BOOKBUB | TWITTER

Tessa’s birthright makes her the only one who can bring peace to the world but there is evil who wants to finish the job they failed when they let her get away in the first place. With the Crown of Nine that rules over the realm and a sidekick named Oliver, Tessa goes on a quest to take back her place in the kingdom. She has it all planned out but you know what they say about best laid plans, things never go quite as you expect. I love fantasy so Crown of One Hundred Kings is right up my alley and it did not disappoint. Tessa goes on an epic journey to reclaim what is hers but it proves more difficult than she ever imagined. From rebels and mercenaries, to unexpected allies, Tessa must face her fears and fight for what she believes in. I ached for this realm, this realm that used to be united and prosperous. This realm whose people trusted each other. My need to change it now bloomed into an intense sense of purpose. It started in my toes and bubbled through me, rushing through my veins, filling my blood with intention and my bones with determination. It’s an adventure full of self-discovery and growth. There are battles to be won and people to save. There is darkness that threatens everything Tessa stands for that pushes Tessa to the limit. She is strong and brave though, and her exciting and daring quest leaves you on the edge of your seat. Along with the action and adventure, there is a glimpse into what could be an epic love story. Betrothed as children, Tessa and Taelon had their life planned out. Now, things are different and they must figure out how they fit into each other’s lives, if it’s even possible. Tessa still has a whole heap of challenges before she sits on the throne and I cannot wait for more! It's has a wonderful mix of light and dark, fun and feels, and I loved it!! My quest had finally ended. But the journey to becoming queen was just beginning. *ARC generously provided by the author*

I devoured this book, there is no other way to explain it. I was hooked from the first words to the last, and y’all I am DYING! I need the next one ASAP. Crown of One Hundred Kings follows the story of Tess, an orphaned princess, as she crosses her realm to claim the throne. Fans of fantasy will love this book! Tessana Allisand fled her home when she was a young girl after finding her family slaughtered. Raised by monks in the farthest kingdom of the realm, Tess knows it’s time to return. With her best, and only, friend Oliver, she sets out on a trek across the nine kingdoms only to find a dark magic that is lurking in the shadows, villages in disrepair, and rebellion on the horizon. I love Tess! She’s humble when she needs to be, yet has never lost that confidence that comes with being a royal. She is determined and headstrong, brave in the face of her fears, and loyal to the people of her realm. Finding that her uncle has neglected most of her kingdom is heartbreaking for her, but it only deepens her resolve. I have such respect for her. Oliver is probably my favorite character of the book. Also an orphan and raised by the monks since he was a baby, he is Tess’s only friend at the monastery. Having not taken his vows of silence yet, he’s also the only one that speaks to Tess in her years there. They have an easy friendship. I love their banter! Their relationship is closer to being siblings than friends, and I think that shows just how much Tess trusts him and he believes in her. Then there is Arrick Westnovian, the “Rebel King.” He is the leader of the feared rebel army. Rumors of their ruthlessness abound, and Tess doesn’t know what to make of them. Arrick seems familiar to her, and everything in her begs her to trust him, but why? I personally love Arrick. He is firm yet kind and his fellow rebels follow him without question. To me, that says a lot about a man that someone willingly follows them out of respect for the person. Overall, I loved Crown of One Hundred Kings. Tess and her journey is eye-opening as she crosses kingdoms that are falling prey to the Circle of Shadows. When rebels protect her people and the army does not, Tess knows the job in front of her won’t be easy. It isn’t even one she ever wanted, but (and that’s a big BUT) her duty and loyalty to her people, the love she has for them that is born from watching her own parents rule, drives her. If you enjoy YA fantasy with a dash of romance and a ton of adventure, I highly recommend it!

I really missed having a Rachel Higginson book in my life. I haven't really felt like reading much at all this year and when I do read it feels more like a chore than a desire. Then I get Rachel's newest book and I reminded again why I loved reading! Rachel's writing just instantly draws you into this new world. She writes such compelling storylines and characters that you can but help instantly fall in love (or hate) with. A story about loss, struggle, and finding your destiny against all odds. Tessana lived a charmed life until it was all ripped away with one brutal act. Forced into hiding she is chased by nightmares of her past and fear of the danger that still hunts her. I appreciated this character. She was strong as she was naive and vulnerable. Though she lost it all she was still able to grow up loved and protected. It will serve her well as she fights for her throne but I enjoyed that she was the usually jaded I hate the world heroine that is so often found in YA fantasy. it was refreshing to say the last. I just have to say I adored Taelon. That man is everything I love in a hero. Strong and Loyal it was great to see him work but also loved how he didn't try to overshadow Tessana. He would always protect Tessana as he promised as a child but let her forge her own destiny. They both had amazing chemistry with each other and the witty banter was to die for. The book was perfect and had some faults. There were some continuity issues and felt like the important player's attitudes were a bit to caviler for the dangers they were heading into. However, I was still captivated by this book and it was hard to put down. *********Author provided a review copy*********

4-4.5 stars. Tessa Allisand is a long way from home, but after nearly 8 years, it's finally time to go back to her kingdom of Elysia. She needs to reclaim her place on the throne or her kingdom will continue to suffer, as will those around it. I haven't read a Rachel Higginson fantasy in quite some time although that is the genre that first introduced me to her back in the Star-Crossed days. I loved delving back into this with her writing and a new world and characters. Tessa has been sheltered after all this time so she's not up to date or experienced as far as crown matters go. She's not even fit for the journey to Elysia, but Tesss is determined more than anything and that stubbornness serves her well. No surprise that she meets Rebels along the way and has to decide if they are going to help or hurt her mission. Once Tesss arrives Elysia, the battle for the crown has just begun. There's suspense, intrigue, villains, betrayal and a trial. She has to prove herself fit for the position of queen and with so many obstacles in the way, it would seem like a lost cause. I loved her spirit and unwillingness to give up. The chemistry between her and Taelon is palpable and electric. But they both bear responsibilities to their respective kingdoms so an alliance may be all that can be had. I can't wait to find out what other challenges awaits Tessa in the next book because whether she's ready or not, she's committed and I adore a heroine who is not afraid to stand up for herself and for what is right.

Tessana was spirited away to another kingdom and looked after by silent monks for many years before she starts having dreams of needing to go back home. Tess takes along her best friend Oliver who lightens things up and also keeps her company. The world is not what it used to be, danger is around every corner and the world is in unrest. It is not long before Tess and Oliver find things are very different to what they were expecting and there spirit and determination will be tested. She is also a very strong character in both will and the determination to do what she was born for, she stand up for those around her and of those she feels need her help. I guessed who the guy who comes into the picture was very quickly and was glad to be right and was glad that Tess may only be 17, but she was not an immature 17, therefore was more relatable to me, or it may just have been the authors incredible writing. Tess's journey is the main plot of the story with an undercurrent of romance with he new male character and although the book does not end in a cliff hanger, it does leave many questions unanswered leading into the next book of the series, which i seriously cannot wait for.

3.75 stars I will say that I was intrigued when reading the synopsis to this one when it popped up my Instagram feed one day and I am happy to say that I pleasantly enjoyed the heck out of this story! But also due to the circumstances the insta love was expected and I really found it sweet. 3.75 stars I will say that I was intrigued when reading the synopsis to this one when it popped up my Instagram feed one day and I am happy to say that I pleasantly enjoyed the heck out of this story! She reminded me of myself and I appreciated her naive nature as she’s young and didn’t understand the world that she was hidden from. Her doubt felt real and so I was easily able to root for her. As for Oliver, her best friend, I loved his company! He was just an amazing and understanding friend who is just so hilarious! Oliver really had me laughing throughout and I’m glad that Tessana has a friend who believes in her. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the both of them. As for the whole world and story, I was really interested with the religions and magic. The settings were easy to imagine. This book gave me some Anastasia (movie) and Avatar the Last Airbender vibe to an extent! And I really liked that?! Overall I wish to learn a little bit more of the other kingdoms even though we were given some ideas of their culture and regions. I can’t wait to see how this story progresses and I’ll be on the lookout for the next book!

Fantasy books can sometimes be either hit or miss and this author has most definitely written a HIT !!! This is a story set in a time when white and black magic could still hold power, when good and evil clashed daily and when good really had to fight intense battles just to prevail. This is the story of a Princess, legacy, tradition and revenge. A princess determined to take the crown that is rightfully hers, and to take up the legacy left by her Assassinated father and family. I have to say that this book surprised me, firstly because its not my usual type of read and secondly because i was absolutely hooked right from the beginning !!!!! The Princess Tessana has been hidden away for years and now its time to return and claim the throne, there is danger at every corner, betrayal a lick away, and those who would rather see her dead constantly peeking over her shoulder. Who can she trust? and how can she win this battle without an army? I LOVED every part of this book, Tessana is young, but she is not fearless, yet her courage left me in awe. Each turn brings new danger and new truths. Written in such a way that you travel their path of danger with your heart on edge and the feeling of fear, its real !!! I really can't wait for the next part of this amazing story, I'm most definitely invested and part of Tessana's army!!!

Higginson knocked it out of the ballpark with this one and it needs to be read!

Plenty of action and great details that don't wear the story down. This author once again shows me that I did good in following her success.

This is the start of an EPIC series if the first book is anything to go by! It put me in mind of some of my favourite fantasy books, that were pre-eBooks.
