This is a suspense romance, and this is the first book in the Desert Justice series. I found the suspense in this book very great, but I did guess who did it before it was revealed. It did not take anything from the story for me, and I still loved the ending. I enjoyed following the characters, and the setting was the right one for this story. I really enjoyed this book. So exciting to be launching into a new six book series! This one takes place in Death Valley, which is one of my favorite spots to visit ever! Laney Holland-Duke was a happily married wife for all of five weeks and then the rug was pulled out from under her. Her husband, the love of her life, Beckett Duke was arrested for murder. Her husband, the love of her life, Beckett Duke was arrested for murder. The two of them were running the resort hotel Beckett owns together one moment and the next Laney was on her own. Laney believed her husband was innocent. It was bad when Beckett refused to allow her to visit him in jail. But that wasn't the worst part. No! The worst was the day Laney received the divorce papers from Beckett. How could he? They both promised, "for better and for worse" on their wedding day. Add to this heartbreak was the fact Laney found herself pregnant. It's a wonderful thing. She was told she would never be able to get pregnant. But it would be hard to raise a child on her own. Then Beckett was released from jail. The case was dismissed because of improper police procedure. He wouldn't come back. Would he? What would she do if he did come back? Beckett Duke was madly in love with his wife Laney. He had to protect her from any backlash in the small town of Furnace Falls. That's why he sent the divorce papers. Laney shouldn't have to suffer due to his situation. Beckett was innocent. Someone framed him for the murder of Pauline Sanderson, a guest at his Hotsprings Hotel and a female Beckett knew from high school. It seems that hardly anyone believes in his innocence. Beckett knew that after his release he had to return to Furnace Falls. Two days before his release he was jumped by some inmates and beaten. The message was that Pauline's brother Kenny planned to get revenge for his sister's murder by killing Beckett and Laney. Beckett had to go back and protect Laney. Framed in Death Valley by Dana Mentink is the first book in her Desert Justice series. This is a well-crafted, well-plotted story. Ms. Mentink managed to keep me guessing as to who the actual murderer was until the end. I couldn't stop reading until I found out. Plus there's tons of action in this book with several attempts on the lives of the two main characters Laney and Beckett. I liked seeing the character growth of both of them, especially Beckett's. I can't wait to see who this author features in the next book in the series. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I know I always say that each book by this author is the best she has written but I have to say it again - this one is the best she's written! What an honorable, courageous man! However, someone is going to kill his wife and unborn child (which he didn't even know about!) so Beckett is not going to let that happen! Laney, his wife, is also a great character! She's had a very tough life too and she thought she could count on Beckett until those divorce papers came! There is so much action and a lot of twists and turns. I couldn't put this book down. Highly recommend!

Review of Framed in Death Valley by Dana Mentink. As always her books are hard to lay down. Suspense, murder, innocence sent to jail and God works through it for his good. I won't give away store. But who done it not who you would think. A wife only one believed her husband innocent. But things bring hurt to her because she took her wedding vows for better or worse. But I felt like I was in book 2 of a series because there was so much backstory for Laney and Beckett. I did love that Beckett and Laney are so different in personality and somewhat far apart in age yet perfect for each other in life and faith. The setting of Death Valley, CA is fascinating. "Framed in Death Valley" is a Christian suspense novel. After accidentally seriously injuring someone in high school, Beckett was labeled a monster by many of the town's folk. Wanting to free his wife from being married to a man with a horrible reputation, he sent her divorce papers. He's released on a technicality, but the relatives of the dead woman are determined to get their own revenge, starting with Beckett's wife and unborn child. Laney's heart was broken when she received the divorce papers, but she accepts Beckett's protection and begins to realize how deeply Beckett hates himself. Laney struggles to trust him with her love even as she helps him learn to forgive himself for past mistakes and to see his own worth. The suspense came from the ongoing danger to both Beckett and Laney, the relationship tensions, and the mystery of who really did kill the murdered women. They must discover and prove the true murderer to clear Beckett's name and stop the attacks. The main characters were more developed than is typical for a short romantic suspense like this, and I enjoyed how the characters grew as people and learned to build each other up. The focus was on Beckett and Laney's relationship and their surviving the attacks while the mystery of whodunit was mostly solved by another character. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I recommend this enjoyable suspense novel. I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

The exotic (for this Canadian) setting ups the edge factor in this thrilling suspense. As does the fact that Beckett and Laney are married. Cue the comfort chocolate and get cozy because this is one unputdownable page-turner. Love the way the author has set the stage for the series while immersing readers in Beckett and Laney's harrowing tale. There's emotional angst aplenty between the fractured marriage and the hurt it's caused. Beckett's attempts at making a noble sacrifice meets with disastrous results and Laney has every reason in the world to be feeling hurt and angry and confused. My heart ached for them both, but especially for Beckett, who has past demons to conquer as well. I do so love emerging from a read with a heart that feels tender and bruised. :-) And the suspense! Complicated twists and unexplained mysteries and more than one devious villain to contend with. Absolutely riveting to the very last word.

The tension starts on page one and continues to build until the killer is revealed, and I have to admit, I didn't figure out who the real killer was. Though, looking back, there were some subtle signs. It was interesting to watch Beckett care for and protect the woman he still loved while trying to retain his distance. At the same time, Laney was conflicted: how did she feel about Beckett? Could she trust him not to break her heart again? Ms. Mentink did a good job of weaving lots of tension and excitement in this book while also providing points for spiritual consideration. One of the major themes in Framed in Death Valley was that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Laney had embraced that message but Beckett had a way to go. Still, he did get the message in the end though I would have liked to see him wrestle with his faith a bit more. Overall, this was a good read and will remind you that your identity should be found in Christ and not in what people say about you. I will boldly state that this book is the best in suspense, danger, faith and redemption I have ever read. From the beginning I was rooting for Beckett. He was wrongly accused of a death but is determined to prove his innocence. I loved how he always thought of his wife and her safety first. Unconditional love is powerful and it continues to amaze me as I read this story. I absolutely loved the setting and was in awe of how accurate the author described it. She does mention that she visited Death Valley for research and it shows in the details of the story. I don’t have to wonder what it is like there because I can vividly picture it with her poetic words. The author hits it out of the park, or should I say desert with this exciting story. There is no time to breathe as Beckett is in a race to save his wife Laney from death. I won’t go into details of the story but I will say how intense it is at times. I held my breath as Laney and her unborn child are targets in an eye for an eye battle. Revenge is in the heart of someone who blames Beckett for a death and wants to kill the one person close to him. There are a few very tender moments that can’t be overlooked in the story. Beckett has always thought of himself as a “monster” and that stigma has followed him since high school. The best part of the book for me was two things. First I loved the redemption and second chance theme in the story. Laney and Beckett have a lot to deal with and the faith between them helps open up communication. It was nice to see how much Beckett loved his wife and wanted to reconcile with her. It was an emotional journey for both. The next thing I liked was how the author fooled me with who the killer was. Oh I was so sure I knew who it was that I was patting myself on the back. To my surprise and shock I was so so wrong. The brilliance of how the author took this character from in the shadows to front and center was nothing short of excellent and skilled writing. In the end I was very pleased with the ending. Great job. “Love is when someone is ready to stand by you in the worst moments of your life.” I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Combining thrilling chases through the desert, suspense over the identity of the murder who framed Beckett, and the rekindling of love and trust between Beckett and Laney, this was such a pleasure to read. The brokenness from their pasts had caused both of them to guard their hearts and fear rejection. The healing and the hope as they began to see their value in the eyes of God was touching and beautiful. When the identity of the killer was revealed, I was stunned and imagine you will be too! Beckett’s reaction to Laney’s pregnancy was so amazing! My heart melted at his reactions to hearing the heartbeat and seeing Muffin in the ultrasound. And how cute is that nickname that he gave the baby? Oh, I also loved the way he was so thrilled to help fulfill Laney’s cravings! As long as she was tied to him, her life and livelihood were in danger. Divorce was the only answer. But before he disappears from her life forever, he needs to be sure she is safe from the threats to her life. Beckett's life fell apart when he was framed for murder. He never did it, but almost everyone is convinced he did it. When you are tried and convicted in the court of public opinion, what chance do you have of changing anyone's judgment? Worse, the killer might be back determined to keep him from finding evidence that proves his innocence. And Laney might get caught in that determination to stop him. Framed in Death Valley is a well-paced read that will keep the reader guessing at just who the guilty party truly is. There are suspects aplenty but no clear motive as to why Pauline was murdered or why Beckett was framed. This is a clean-read suspense, no graphic murder scenes, perfect if you want suspense that doesn't give you nightmares. And being a Love Inspired Suspense read you know there will be a satisfactory outcome or at least the promise of one. In this story, we see firefighter Beckett Duke and Laney Holland. Beckett has been framed for a murder that he did not commit. Because of this Beckett has given up on everything in his life. This also includes, Laney. However, then Laney is in danger and Beckett knows he needs to protect her. Just like all of Dana's books - this book will start off with so much action and will continue throughout the whole book. Right before Beckett is released from prison, he is jumped by fellow inmates. He is given a message. The brother of the woman that Beckett is accused of killing states that he will kill Beckett and Lacey. Who is the real killer and why was Beckett framed were questions that kept this tight little story going. Again I really liked that the couple was already married angle in this story. I haven't read too many like that and I wish there was more. I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own. https://pausefortales.blogspot.com/20...

Beckett Duke is such a wounded hero, desperate to protect those he loves whilst not feeling worthy of their love in return. He’d only been married to Laney for five weeks when he was wrongly accused of murdering the woman whose body he found on their property. Just days before he was released other inmates beat him up and told him the victim’s brother was out for revenge and going to murder both him and his wife. He’s determined to protect her and wants to prove his innocence. Can he bring the perpetrator to justice without endangering those he loves? The author does a great job at bringing the locations, events and characters to life in this edge of your seat, suspense filled story. I found it to be a real page turner in which I was rooting for the Dukes to be able to clear his name and rekindle their romance. It is a fascinating read, with plenty of great secondary characters, multiple attacks to be thwarted and a heartwarming read, too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense stories. Thanks to Harlequin and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

Do you ever pick a book based on title alone? Knowing Framed in Death Valley by Dana Mentink took place in, well, Death Valley, I was immediately curious. Laney Holland has stood by her husband, so when he sends her divorce papers, she is stunned. Then he shows up with news that she’s in danger. She has news for him, too. She is expecting their child. If only Beckett can figure out who the real murderer is, perhaps he can clear his name, save his family, and get his happily ever after. Framed in Death Valley felt like an unusual Love Inspired Suspense story to me. The timeline of when Laney and Beckett married and he was framed is a bit confusing. However, I loved how the author portrayed Laney in her early pregnancy stage. It made her relatable and showed her strength, and Beckett’s reaction is priceless. If you enjoy romantic suspense featuring the possibility of renewed love and second chances, check out Framed in Death Valley. --- I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Imagine being married for just weeks when your spouse is then arrested for murder. A murder he didn't commit, but had been framed for. That is just the situation that Laney found herself in. This story kicks off as her husband Beckett is being released from jail because of police error. With a killer still on the loose, they find their lives in danger. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the whodunnit, but this one didn't occur to me until right before the reveal. I always enjoy a story that surprises me. I must admit that I'm not always the biggest fan of suspense involving expectant mothers (I find they tend to make me overly anxious at times), it really does add a greater sense of danger. This was a rather unique love story in that the love interests were already married, but going through a rough patch... to put it mildly. While I love a new romance, there is something even greater about a couple working through things and truly putting in an effort to make it work. That's the true love story, isn't it? Overall, this was a quick and entertaining read that fans of romantic suspense are sure to enjoy! **I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are my own.

Good characters, an intriguing plotline, an unusual setting, and a surprise that I didn't see coming! Author Dana Mentink includes all of these in Framed in Death Valley and the results are fantastic! Beckett Duke grabbed my heart from the first pages, with his high school memory of being called a monster, a bully, and an animal. Imagine his distress when he discovers that his soon-to-be ex-wife is pregnant and that they both are now targets of a killer! It's evident that he and Lainey still share a special bond, but how will they prove that Beckett isn't responsible for the deaths of two women? What will happen to their innocent unborn baby? Danger and suspense are prevalent throughout this story, but it is the faith element that I especially loved. Lainey's strong faith has a positive effect on Beckett, and it's very rewarding to see him begin to believe in himself. and in God! What more can you ask in an inspirational suspense novel? Framed in Death Valley is the first book in the new Desert Justice series and I can't wait to see what Mentink has in store for all of her readers! Dana Mentink is a wonderful storyteller. She knows how to build an exciting mystery by adding layer-upon-layer of intrigue and danger that culminates in an ending that has the reader going “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” This is not a lengthy book, and that makes the faultless pacing of this story that much more important. I thought at one point in the book I had the mystery solved; then realized I didn’t; and I have to admit that I was surprised this story took the turn that it did. I thought at one point in the book I had the mystery solved; then realized I didn’t; and I have to admit that I was surprised this story took the turn that it did. Beckett and Laney were a couple that had my sympathy from the beginning of the book. Beckett had been framed for murder and it seemed the whole town had turned against him. Laney, his wife, was the only person who believed in him, but Beckett had pushed her away. However, Laney was in danger, and Beckett would do anything possible to protect her. Beckett’s struggle was to have anyone believe him, including law enforcement, that Laney needed protection. The setting of Death Valley also plays a major role in the book, as there’s a couple of scenes where desert environment becomes a major factor in the suspense. There’s a thread of faith in this book that’s uplifting: We are who God says we are. Beckett and Laney learn to embrace this truth throughout their story, and it’s a good reminder to us, too. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I have been a fan of fiction author Dana Mentink for several years. When I read I know I am going to have interesting characters who catch my attention right away, a suspenseful plot and setting that I can 'see' simply with Mentink's vivid description. This couple, Beckett Duke who is suspected of murder and Laney Holland Duke may as well be strangers with the insurmountable problems they face including the fact that a baby is on the way. They are thrown back together when their lives are threatened and everything seems to spin out of control. May I say that I notice that Dana Mentink is growing stronger in her writing talent and process? Her stories are becoming more intense. She caught me this time as even though I love the challenge of guessing 'whodunit' I did not figure out who the actual murderer was. I was surprised. This is an excellent read and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a reviewer copy from the author and this is my own personal opinion of the story.

Beckett was framed for a murder he didn't commit but everyone feels like he did after his history. So he decided to give up his short lived marriage not wanting her to live though the pain of associating with him. Now he got an angry family member to the victim on his tail and now him and his soon to be ex wife is being targeted. Not only that another death is being pinned on him and he must find the person before he lands in jail or he and his wife get killed. This was such a great book. Beckett was dealing with a lot of pent up issues especially with this past a honest mistake marked him and now the towns people see him as a bad person rather then someone who committed a mistake. Now with the death of the victim being blamed on him everyone is so ready to jump on the band wagon to blame him. His wife is on his side if only he'd see that but with how things are going with her now with feeling that abandonment of him wanting a divorce her past and the new life the might have she pretty conflicted about how things are. There was so much mystery surrounding what was going on and I loved that there was plenty of attempts and accidents to keep things interesting that I just couldn't put this book down. Overall great book I enjoyed it.

Will Beckett prove that he was framed for murder? WOW, another FANTASTIC book from Dana Mentink. I was literally on the edge of my chair with all the twists and turns. I really loved how Laney stuck to the vows and marriage and stuck by her husband while he was in prison. The book is short, but has a lot of action and love packed into it! I am SUPER Excited about this series and cannot wait until more books are released!

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Framed in Death Valley. This is the first book in the series Desert Justice. I enjoyed this romantic suspense where the suspense never stopped. The characters are done well. Laney is a great heroine. She remained faithful to her husband when he was accused of murder and the evidence seemed conclusive. And she's smart. I like that in a heroine. When she was in a deadly situation, she thought through the possibilities and was no wimp. And Beckett is a good, though flawed, hero. He has to overcome an event from his past that destroyed his self confidence. I liked seeing him I enjoyed this romantic suspense where the suspense never stopped. The characters are done well. It's almost continuous yet is well paced with other aspects of the plot. There's a good twist at the end too. This is an entertaining and engaging romantic suspense. I like that it includes themes of forgiveness and reconciliation. I do wish there had been a bit more description of the location. It seems like the setting amazed Mentink and I look forward to her sharing that amazement in the pages of future novels. This is the first in a new series and I'll be watching for the next one. Mentink brings two characters together that you want to nurture and rescue right from the start. Then she piles on unjust disasters, enemies, and an unforgiving environment. What could be more unforgiving than a small town and Death Valley?! I really enjoyed this nerve-wracking, nail-biting novel from page one. Mentink deftly weaves God’s unconditional, accepting love into a very temperamental, mercurial environment. Highly recommended.
