I was sent a copy of this book by Xpresso Tours in exchange for an honest review. To be honest, this book wasn't entirely my cup of tea. This book is a dark fantasy/romance, and follows Valentina, who runs away from her abusive brother and finds work at the mysterious Chateau Winslow. This book is a dark fantasy/romance, and follows Valentina, who runs away from her abusive brother and finds work at the mysterious Chateau Winslow. Meanwhile, the tension between humans and dwarves is growing, and ~magic~ is awakening. I found Valentina to be a bit of a damsel in distress, and her character a bit flat. I also thought that the story didn't have much of an arc, and I was quite bored a lot of the time. I just wasn't quite sure what was going on with the attitude towards women? I think the following quotes were meant to enhance the story and give you a broader sense of the characters and the world, but they mostly ended up just making me uncomfortable. For instance: "If his vater was looking for a more suitable heir to sit upon his throne, he should have sired another son with one of his four wives. Instead, only girls had sprung from his loins." Um, there were so many things wrong with that sentence. I understand that it was meant to give me more of a sense of the person that the character's 'vater' is, but I was uncomfortable and just couldn't overlook it. *guy is staring at girl* '"Nice. Very nice. Don't you agree?" He said more to himself than to his mate. "Though she could use a bit of fattening up. I do prefer my women with some substance."' Grooossssss. Once again, I understand that the author is trying to show you how bad these characters are, but something about the quotes that I am mentioning missed their mark. '"Someday, I hope to marry."' Come on, is that all a girl has to aspire to? Really? Same man who slapped a woman's butt that morning says: "I may be all the things you say, but I don't abide a man mistreating a woman." And then is genuinely shocked when he is called out for it. I almost forgot about this next one. The very man who is supposed to be Valentina's knight in shining armour says, "When I found Valentina, I'd take her far away, with or without her consent." Like, is that supposed to be... attractive? I think not. Also, Valentina is working at Chateau Winslow, right? And she's looking at the man who owns the place (a middle aged widow with two children) and he says, "Like what you see?" Like sis nooooo, don't make this worse than it has to be. Anyways, those were all my honest, personal thoughts and opinions on this book, but please remember that just because it wasn't my jam doesn't mean that it won't be yours. This review is not an attack at the author, or anyone who is involved with this book. Thank you once again to Xpresso Tours for providing me with a copy of this.

One morning Valentina and her brother wake to find their parents gone. Now, as with all small towns, there are horror stories about monsters that steal people and animals on the road. Hopefully, their parents will return soon. The author is very descriptive when telling this story. One can see the snow covered Alps and the beautiful, lush green fields. Of course, there are always woods that are as haunting as they are beautiful. In this case, there are also dwarfs living in these woods and mountains. Because they work on a farm, there isn't much time for exploring so Valentina's world revolves around her chores and selling her goods at the local town market. When her parents don't return and days turn into months, her brother becomes even less help. He'd rather drink and fritter what little money they have away. Finally, one night he pulls the last straw. When he and his drinking buddies fall asleep, Valentina steals away into the night. Little does she know, a great adventure awaits her. When the truth comes out about her and Orell, life changes forever. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat.

We see dwarves and humans clashing and Valentina and Nisse will have to work together to bring them peace that both sides desire. I really loved the adventures these two found themselves in and how I was transported to this magical world so much so that I felt as if I was walking right next to them as they made their way. I couldn’t get enough of this book and found myself reading well past my bedtime to find out how it would all come to an end and now I anxiously await more from Pippa J. Frost!

Who would squander the money their Grandfather had sent them on alcohol and other things. Then her brother would leave Valentina to manage the farm anyway she could. She has two love interests in this story a dwarf prince who falls for her while protecting her and pretending to be Lord Winslow. Then there is Nisse her brother's friend who she has loved since childhood. I liked them both. I was glad Nisse won her heart in the end since she loved him so. Another character that appears often in this story is Valentina's best friend Flicker a dwarf. He is quite likable and charming and protective of her. The story starts with her having a hard time at the farm. Then progresses to one night where her brother tries to sell her to a man nam Helias to cover his debts. That night she runs away to the Winslow estate not knowing it's under the illusion of dwarf magic. I don't want to give away any more, because it's a great story! So, Read it and find out the rest for yourself. The only things I didn't like in this story was a character's father died and that is why I can't give it five stars. I don't like certain character death. That and their explanation of the magic was sometimes a little confusing to follow.

Preface: I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Actual rating: 2.5 stars This book was disappointing. It promises to be a dark fantasy romance, but it's really none of those things. No one important dies. The romance is established as having started in the main characters' backstory, and we get both people's POVs, so we know they're into each other. The only question is whether the male half of the couple will survive, or if he'll die and be replaced with her other potential romantic partner. The other guy has only a handful of scenes with her, and although there are a few cute/teasing moments, there's never enough to build a foundation for a relationship, or cause the personality shift we see in him. The plot is pointless and silly. Our main female character has no depth or agency, and our villains are both flat cardboard cutouts - your typical evil-for-evils-sake king and evil-for-evils-sake monster-man. There's sexism, attempted sexual assault, all the usual hallmarks for a flat, boring, gross villain. The climax has nothing to do with the main character's arc or choices, she just has random powers that do random things and then the story's over. Overall, I would give this a hard pass. It's not dark, it's not a romance, and it's barely a fantasy novel.

House of Illusions is an enchanting fantasy novel by Pippa J. Frost. It is set in the Swiss Alps, and draws on local folklore to create an immersive magical world. The narrative passes between the perspectives of many characters, always clearly indicated at the start of the chapter. This lets the reader see the story unfolding across multiple settings, as we begin to piece together the puzzle. There are plenty of twists and turns and, as the title suggests, you can’t always trust what you see. For House of Illusions is an enchanting fantasy novel by Pippa J. Frost. It reminded me of childhood visits to the alps and the stories I was told about dwarves and dragons. The descriptions of the landscape and details such as plants really enhanced the vivid picture Frost paints. I found it hard to warm to the characters as we are always aware that not all of them can be trusted. But by the end, once I knew who was really on Valentina’s side, I definitely had some favourites! And Valentina herself is an admirable protagonist, with a strong sense of duty and self-preservation. For me, this is a five-star book. I would definitely recommend it to fantasy fans! This book will transport you and draw you into a fantastic story. I’m looking forward to reading more by Frost in the future!

A well written story, which has elements of dark fantasy and romance. Valentina is a fighter, who works hard for her living. Nisse, the other protagonist has a soft corner on Valentina and when he finds her missing in the mansion, he sets off in a quest to find her. In the backdrop, there is a war raging between dwarves and the humans. Will Valentina and Nisse be able to bring back peace between them? This forms the crux of the story. It is a breezy read with elements of fantasy, magic, suspense and romance. The narration happens in the point of view from multiple characters, which makes the book more interesting. I really enjoyed this book!

Don’t miss out on an intriguing and entertaining book that should be added to the top of your TBR list of stories. I highly recommend it.

There are so many enchanted creatures in this book, and Frost made it entirely believable that humans live alongside them. I so wish this had been a series instead of a stand-alone just to see more of the characters and magic. This is getting added to my re-read list so I can explore all the “Illusions” with eyes wide open. P.S. I’ll gladly spearhead Team Lord Winslow forever and ever.

A wonderfully crafted tale filled with a mix of human and magical creatures and great world building. Greed, evil, lust for power and an illusion so well crafted it felt real. This is a new Author to me I will be watching to see what else she puts out. A well written twisted fairy tale that held my interest until the end. Valentina will have a lot to go through and, some very good surprises, also finding love with Nisse. The story has adventure, suspense, drama, danger, evil, villains, and romance. I would say read this book I do not think you will be disappointed if you do. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Its so full of magic and mystery it kept me on my toes with every page turn. Drawers and human will they ever not be at war with each other. Can they find peace?

WOW! What a great read. This is not my usual style book but I couldn't pull myself away! The author does a great job with Character build-up as well as having a good flow throughout the book. I really couldn't put this one down, there's some ups downs, and sideways feelings in this book. I look forward to reading more from this author! WOW! What a great read.
