But he hadn't bargained on the lessons he'd learn from his unlikely companion. Three months after leaving home, on a remote road in the mountains between Montenegro and Bosnia, he came across an abandoned kitten. When Scottish man, Dean Nicholson, set off on his around the world bike ride in 2018, he had no idea where it would take him. After his friend Ricky left Dean to travel on alone, it was his journey through parts of Bosnia which changed everything for him. The tiny abandoned kitten on the side of the road that Dean named Nala (from the Lion King) would become his great companion, best friend, and conscience. Dean’s small Instagram presence suddenly ballooned to hundreds of thousands of followers. The videos he added on Nala, and their trip was well viewed and the friends he and Nala made as they travelled was life changing. Heartwarming, poignant, amazingly touching, Dean and Nala’s adventures have been both good and bad. But always together, Nala’s instincts for danger, sickness and more is phenomenal. Nala’s World is an exceptional memoir by Dean Nicholson, and with much more of their journey still ahead of them, I hope there will be another book giving readers and fans further insight into their adventures. Highly recommended. With thanks to Hachette AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I started following the author in Instagram some time ago because who doesn't want to see photos of a cat travelling the world with her rescuer! It's funny though: I'm still seeing his Instagram posts so I know Dean & Nala are both alive and well, but when the book begins describing an illness or bad situation I get all nervous for them! I take solace in the face they're both still doing well. I hope the author writes another book once he wraps up his journey. I've love to hear more about their travels.

Dean Nicholson is a bighearted Scottish bloke biking his way down the coastline from Bosnia, when he and his buddy have a spat and part ways. Of course, they become inseparable almost immediately, and have some scary adventures together as they travel south to Greece, spend a summer in Santorini, and start crossing Turkey before routes through India and Iran and Russia become too challenging, and they turn back. Dean and Nala (the cat) become social media darlings, with hundreds of thousands of followers, and Dean becomes a source of inspiration for many, using his status to raise funds to protect animals and nature. Then, the coronavirus sinks his grand plan to circumnavigate the globe on his Trek bicycle. Nala is a delight, whether playing with others, kissing Dean, clowning around, riding in front of the bike, rear or on Dean's shoulder. A heart warming story, with the classic "who saved who" theme as Dean admits straight up that she made him a better person.

I loved it. I have followed them on Instagram since the Dodo video and it was fun to relive their adventures but also find out more about the what was going on behind the scenes and more about Dean’s thoughts on things.

Amazing story! I don't know why I hadn't heard of them before reading this book, but you better bet I'm going to keep up with it now. This is one of my favourite books of this year by far. I was pretty disappointed when my own three month bike trip in Europe was cancelled this summer, and this story has given me a fix of it so that I can hold off until it is safe to do it. I’ve been a big fan of Dean and Nala for quite some time now. When Dean said he was writing a book about his journey I was thrilled! And this book did not disappoint. I absolutely loved reading about all the things I saw Dean and Nala do on Instagram. But now with more details! I just love them so much.

I have been a follower of Dean and Nala’s instagram account (@1bike1world) and his Youtube channel since early 2019 and it has been such a joy to see their posts. I am an avid animal lover and traveler so their account was especially a great one to follow. The love he has for Nala and our planet is showcased throughout his Instagram posts, Youtube videos and now his book. I absolutely loved this book so much! I laughed, I smiled and I did get teary eyed especially when Ghost’s chapter came up. By following Dean and Nala, I found a few more great Instagram accounts to follow, @kellyulrichartist who has been illustrating Dean, Nala and Vinny’s journey and @bikecanine who took care of Ghost. I had a wonderful time recounting all that Dean and Nala had experienced so far and looking forward to what is in store for their future. A definite 5-star read!

His biggest issues are when he needs to wait around in a scenic villa for several weeks to get the proper immunizations for his cat or recover from his latest injury that was made worse by him not listening to any doctor's instructions. He is a hard worker who is good at budgeting and that enables him to make this trip, and he does acknowledge is insane level of privilege after wandering into a Syrian refugee camp, so this is coming off a lot meaner than it should, but man, the whole world is shut down because of a pandemic where people have lost their jobs and can't leave their homes and haven't seen their families in months and so his failure to get a visa for Nala to go to some country because of animal control just doesn't seem like a major deal to me. On the youtube channel you get to watch a cute cat and the biking is kind of hypnotic, but you don't have that with a book. He does now use his internet fame to raise money for animal shelters, which is great, and I will acknowledge that. If you haven't been following what is really a very minor news story that's uplifting and cute, this book will not be interesting to you. While the book is not awful, he's not exactly much of a travel writer. He names the countries he travels through and says they're all beautiful and they have good alcohol but you don't get any sense of history or culture like a proper travelogue. I can't recommend it.

Some time last year, the video from The Dodo that introduced Dean and Nala to the world popped up in my Facebook feed. Like everyone else's plans around the world, theirs have been somewhat derailed by the insanity of this year (they're currently in Austria, settled for the winter and apparently doing very well) - hopefully they'll be able to get back on the road in the new year for more exploration and adventures!

I loved the story of how he met Nala and she became his daughter. I loved their play time and how they take care of each other when sick. I especially loved the look Nala gives when he brings another stray back to the bike. I loved the message of the book and how this world is so big full of stereotypes and expectations that can easily get blown away when you actually experience it. I loved the people he met. I even started following the vet on IG. I loved that he followed a timeline within the book and didn't bounce back and forth. I loved that he uses his fame for small charities in dire need. My issue with the book is the constant repetition of things, especially with how the bike ride changed his life or how Ricky and him started out the trip differently, how Nala changed his life, or how he made a mistake about Nala. But it doesn't make me love the book any less. Now, go read this sweet story adventure story. You will not regret it.

Incredible story! Not just an adventure with a cat passenger on a bike, it’s a really reflective story about choosing your own route through the world at your own pace. Friendship with a cat, travels round the world on a bike - no bad points in this book!

Like so many others, I'm one of the followers who discovered Dean and Nala after The Dodo featured them back in April of 2019. I'm an avid traveler and a huge fan of cats in general, so his story spoke to me and I've followed their journey online every day since then. This book is way more than just cute pictures (although there are definitely plenty of those), as it tells Dean's story of why he set out on this journey in the first place, what he's learned along the way, who he's met, what he's seen, and how Nala has literally changed his life. It's part travelogue, part cute kitty story, with a healthy dash of environmental and animal awareness, sprinkled with some life lessons and inner growth, and a side of faith restored in humanity from all the kindness he's shown from strangers. It's definitely a recipe for an enjoyable read that's tough to put down. Having followed Dean and Nala for over a year now, many of the stories in the book and the people he met along the way were familiar to me. But it was interesting to get more details about those stories and learn aspects that I never knew - and that honestly shed some light on his plight. For example, I didn't really know the details of his journey before he found Nala in Bosnia. And I didn't know how he'd gotten his kayaking job on Santorini for the summer, nor that he was actually supposed to stay and work there longer, but he chose to leave the island early. It seems he primarily left early in order to get back on the road and get new content for his now massively swollen follower count -- but it made me a little sad that one of the reasons he chose to leave early was due to all the solicited (and unsolicited) visits to his workplace by his followers. I get the desire to see them, but he was actually working. As it happens, I was actually on Santorini the same time they were, but I didn't want to be a crazy stalker fan, so I didn't go find them. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't. It was also interesting to learn that the idea for this book was pitched to him way back then, when he was on Santorini. His life really did take such a huge turn after The Dodo featured him. I'm sure not all of the changes have been positive, but overall he seems to have used his newfound power/fame for good, which I fully respect. He always impresses me with his care and concern for people, animals, and the environment, and I love that he continues to donate money to charities around the world. (As an aside, I was shocked to learn how many calendars he sold and the total profit!). I also really love hearing about all the strangers he comes across who help him in various ways (either in person or virtually/online). The world has been a pretty ugly place lately, so reading how complete strangers help him and Nala is really the feel-good story we need right now. This book ends in the spring of 2020, right after the lockdowns had crippled the world in the wake of the Covid-19 global pandemic. Dean and Nala have continued their adventures (as much as possible) since then, so I'm hoping that there will be another book sometime in the future.

Their travels have been great to watch on YouTube and read about on Instagram during lockdown, when it was impossible to go anywhere. Virtual travel is the easiest and cheapest kind! These two were meant to be together and I can't wait to find out what their journey has in store for them next. I sincerely hope this book is made into a film; I'd be first in the cinema queue.

Giving 2 stars because of the charity and generosity, the read however just didn't do much for me. Not a fan of social media and if I would have follwed this journey on Instagram before reading maybe it would have been better. However I didn't and it wasn't. Props on the journey, all very cool and admirable l, but as a literary journey not for me. Giving 2 stars because of the charity and generosity, the read however just didn't do much for me. ‘I had always been good at fixing and building stuff, but I hadn’t built much of a life for myself ... I felt that by hitting the road and spending time in another part of the world, I might somehow find myself. Or, at least, find a way of being myself. Someone said to me once that I hit the road to find a road. That seemed about right.’ I have been an avid follower of Dean and Nala since they were featured by The Dodo video. Every morning I need my ‘Dean and Nala’ fix to get me through the day. Being both a lover of travel and cats, there was just so much to enjoy about his Instagram account. Could there really be any more to share than what we had seen across social media? There certainly was and this highly anticipated book lived up to expectations. I was super excited to read this book. It provided so much more detail and insight into the journey of Dean and Nala since they first met. Through reading this, Dean has grown in my esteem tremendously so with the integrity and honesty he has displayed throughout this epic adventure. The way he truthfully details his own personal growth and the love he has for Nala - and indeed the entire animal kingdom - is inspiring. ‘Nala had splayed herself out next to me, as content as could be, soaking up the last rays of the sun and without a care in the world. I looked at her and shook my head. In some ways, I envied her. She had no work responsibilities. No bills to pay, no possessions, no pressures. Lucky her. I’ve always felt that the more people have, the more they have to worry about. Life should be about the simple pleasures. Moments like this. Sunsets, sunrises over deserted beaches. A couple of beers with friends. It doesn’t have to be complicated.’ To think about how much this man’s life has changed through the meeting of this sweet kitty is mindblowing. To then have Dean take this uncalled for fame and turn into promoting and supporting needy charities is highly commendable. His passion for the environment and animal rescue is inspiring and he has used all that has fallen into his lap for the promotion of positive change. Who does not want to read about that? Nala’s World is an exceptional memoir by Dean - a travelogue, a cat story, a pedestal for the promotion of the environment and animal welfare - all tied together with a personal growth story of this lively Scottish soul. Dean and Nala, and indeed the range of people who cross their paths, take large leaps in restoring one’s faith in humanity. I am so excited to continue to witness their journey through social media and hope that there might be future instalments to read once COVID allows it to be so. ‘At another time, in different circumstances, I might have felt disappointed or frustrated to be doubling back on myself. But I didn't feel that way at all. For a start, if the past few months had proven anything it was that my journey around the world wasn’t going to look like anyone else’s. It wasn’t going to run in a straight line or conform to some well-trodden path. I was travelling in Nala's worlds after all. And as long as I had her beside me, that was fine. We’d look after each other.’ This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The quoted material may have changed in the final release.

(You can watch it here https://www.thedodo.com/videos/our-sh...) I am a cat lover (I have two ginger tabbies of my own who we brought with us when we moved from the US to the UK) and a sucker for sweet stories. This book details Dean and Nala’s journey so far, spreading awareness of and support for animal and environmental issues. They’ve sold calendars (and now a book!) to raise money to support animal rescue groups in the countries they visit. It’s also a travelogue, full of tales of their adventures across Europe. It ends right around the start of the pandemic, and there is some legitimate drama in there. I don’t know what I was expecting from this - a bit of fluff and some sweet pictures, I guess. But this is a legitimately entertaining, sweet, and inspirational book. It’s 250 pages, so while it’s capitalizing on their fame a bit, there’s substance here. There are discussions about animal welfare, explorations of what to do with one’s life, thoughts on what matters. And it’s also really, really hopeful. It’s simple and sweet and frankly so welcome at this moment. It brought me joy and I’ll get more joy out of it in the future, looking over the pictures of this adorable kitten and her Scottish human. This is a great book for the time: an endearing, uplifting, and enchanting tale about a cat and her human. I've been following Nala and Dean on their journey since last year and when I heard this book was coming out, I just had to get it. And it did not disappoint. In addition to being a lovely story about a man rescuing a kitten (and, let's face it, she rescuing him), it's also about seeing the world, finding the goodness in people, and learning that maybe -- just maybe -- we're all a bit more This is a great book for the time: an endearing, uplifting, and enchanting tale about a cat and her human. It's not the most elegantly written book, but it was certainly an enjoyable experience ... and just what I needed at this time.

I first heard about 1 bike 1 world when my friend Sidshow Tink mention Dean and Nala in one of her YouTube videos. I have been hocked ever since. When I heard Dean was writing a book about his and Nala's travels I knew I had to get my hands on it. So what did I think of the book? I loved it! The book is very moving. I cried many times while reading this book. I also laughed. The book is about a man traveling the world with his best friend she just happens to be a cat. First book of the year in the bag! Absolutely loved this book. I had started following Dean and Nala on Instagram last year after I saw the video of their story by The Dodo and I was desperate to read the book when I found out it existed. It did not disappoint either! The first non-fiction book I've read in I-don't-know-how-long, and I was hooked from the first page! The story is wonderful and I couldn't help but aww and ahh and laugh out loud at some parts 😆 What a wonderful friendship. If Dean First book of the year in the bag! Absolutely loved this book. If Dean ever reads this, I wish him and Nala all the best with their travels when the pandemic allows them back on the road again, and I can't wait to hear the stories! 😊

I first discovered Dean and his furry travel companion, Nala, when People magazine did a spotlight on them. This was just a few months into their journey together, and I've followed them on Instagram ever since. When I found out that Dean had written a book, I knew I had to read it. Whether you've followed Dean from the beginning, or just want an interesting read, this book does not disappoint. One of the sweetest books I’ve ever read! Dean and Nala’s bond is pure love and is a joy to watch it unfold. I think every cat “owner” out there knows what a treasure we have in our lives, and to see a rough big guy falling in love with a tiny bit of fur is awe-worthy. I’ve been following them on Instagram since the Dodo video came out, and I truly enjoyed reading their adventures in more depth. To Nala and Dean, keep it up and may the world open up for you soon again!

I thought it would just be a cute book with lots of great photos from their travels but it’s a good deal more than that. Dean’s story, written with the help of ghost writer Garry Jenkins, is thought provoking on several levels. It is also a fascinating look at Dean's adventures and an account of lessons learned along the way, all with the help of his rescue cat, Nala. I recommend it. I've followed Dean and Nala's adventures for almost 2 years. In his quest to find out what's really going on in the world, Dean rescues an abandoned kitten.........or maybe the kitten rescued Dean. I look forward to following them for many more adventures as they travel and support animal charities. I've followed Dean and Nala's adventures for almost 2 years. An unfathomable story of a bike riding kitten, plus an heroic effort by the author to make the world a kinder place for animals. As a cat owner I cannot even imagine. Yes, unimaginable feline behavior in my eyes, but when that's all nala has ever known, she found gold! Good for him, may his kind heart pay him back ten fold!
