This is a cozy mystery, and this is the 7th book in the Paws and Claws Mystery series. I have read and review the several other books in this series. I feel with this series you really need to have read the books before this book, and the reason I say that is part of the greatest of this series is the town of Wagtail. One of my favorite cozy mystery settings is the pet wonderland in Wagtail, VA. Folks are gathering for the ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ fancy ball held by the WAG Ladies (rescue volunteers); a group of five very different women who’ve brought their pets along during their stay at the Sugar Maple Inn. Holly Miller helps her grandmother, Oma, manage the beautiful Inn. They adore pets and have several of their own. Trixie, Holly’s rescue dog, has a keen nose for sniffing out dead people. Lo and behold, she finds a corpse washed up on the nearby beach. As the story moves at a brisk pace, I found there were so many suspects introduced that it was somewhat frustrating trying to keep track of who was who (I couldn’t) and which pet was theirs. A gruff, retired Judge has a prominent role in the murder mystery and his situation provides levity in the seriousness of the mystery! I had a niggling feeling I knew who the killer was and it turned out I was correct. All in all, this is a great story. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers! Enjoy trying the delicious recipes the author shares after the story. I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Berkley Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

BIG LITTLE SPIES, the seventh book in the Paws & Claws Mysteries by Krista Davis, is another fun romp through the charming town of Wagtail! The protagonist, Holly Miller, co-owns pet-friendly Sugar Maple Inn with her grandmother, Oma. I love the close relationship they have. Their furry sidekicks, Trixie, Twinkletoes, and Gingersnap, add appeal with their delightful antics. Trixie especially, with her penchant for finding dead bodies and dragging Holly into investigations. One of the many strengths of this series are the characters, both human and pet alike, whether they be the core characters or visitors enjoying all that Wagtail has to offer. As the story progresses, there are a lot of people to remember. However, there is a handy character list at the beginning of the book for referencing. In addition to the pet-centric town setting, the author always manages to set up a memorable event to capture the reader’s attention. In this newest release, visitors are flocking to the town to participate in the ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ pet adoption charity ball. With vivid descriptions, I felt like I was right there, enjoying all the tastes, smells, and delights that the town has to offer. Ms. Davis is quick to set up the scenario for a crime to happen, and keeps a strong pace as the story unfolds. When Trixie finds the body of a visiting pet detective, Holly becomes involved. Could it be one of her guests who did the dastardly deed? As the clues are revealed, Holly finds lots of viable suspects including connections to residents in Wagtail. With a dash or two of romance, a glamorous pet and human ball, and secrets galore, this solid cozy mystery kept me turning pages until I’d read the very last word. Running the Inn with her grandmother, Holly’s chef serves up plenty of mouthwatering food and treats for human and pet guests alike. There are several recipes at the back of the book and I was happy to see that there are several delectable recipes for people and a few safe options for dogs. I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Being the mother of a canine fur baby, another fun visit to Wagtail, courtesy of author Krista Davis, was just what I needed. She has once again added even more depth to this, her seventh Paws and Claws Mysteries. Brava! While there are times I can become exhausted chasing around with a protagonist who has her teeth into something and just won’t let it go, BIG LITTLE SPIES was not one of those cases. I was happy, eager even, to follow along with Holly in an attempt to catch a killer. When every lead that came up turned into a tangled leash, I found myself totally clueless. I wasn’t even close to having it figured out. A brilliant mystery, fabulous charters old and new, animals, murder, and so very much more. The perfect addition to the Paws and Claws Mysteries, BIG LITTLE SPIES was an all-around satisfying treat. A real read-in-one-sitting tale, this story has it all. You just can’t go wrong with this book! Oh, and there are treats by way of recipes included in the book! I feel as though this review is not up to my usual standards. My concentration was scattered while writing this one. Please don’t let that stop you from picking up a copy of BIG LITTLE SPIES for yourself. You’re going to love it!

Pet friendly anything is my kind of things! I loved visiting the town of Wagtail with all my furry friends (and the humans aren't bad either). I was able to get this one on audio and listened to it in one day. The story sucks you in and the mystery was pretty good. I wasn't sure who was going to end up being the killer of the pet detective. I honestly thought it would be more than one of the ladies. I wasn't disappointed in the ending and how it all went down. Now to wait for the next one!! Pet friendly anything is my kind of things! Big Little Spies by Krista Davis is the 7th A Paws & Claws Mystery. I love visiting Wagtail in each delightful tale. While Big Little Spies could be read on its own, I recommend reading this charming series in order. Holly, Liesel, Rose, Holmes, and the other residents of Wagtail are wonderful characters. They are developed characters who are friendly and relatable. I love all the cats and dogs. They run around playing, snooping, getting into mischief as well as helping find a clue now and then. Wagtail is a special town. I would love to live in this pet-friendly place. The mystery is well done. It is clever and fun to follow (and solve). There is plenty of action to keep things lively. I enjoy following Holly and Trixie as they ask questions and dig up clues. There are some great twists and turns in this whodunit. There is a good wrap up at the end. I wish all cozy mysteries were as well done as this one. There are some recipes at the end of the book for humans and canines. I am going to try the canine recipes (I think my fur babies will love them). I also learned to check the ingredients on my peanut butter before giving it to my dog. This is one of those books that you cannot wait to see how it ends, but you also do not want it do end. I was sad to leave Wagtail, and I cannot wait for my next visit. Big Little Spies is a captivating whodunit with a dead detective, a beastly bash, a misplaced pooch, a startling romance, a clever canine, and a crazed killer.

Reading this book is like visiting old friends. Every book in the series gets better and better, with this latest installment being no exception. Wagtail is a place of dreams, the characters and their relationships developed more and more each installment. The mystery was full of twists and turns, not giving anything away. A perfect read!

Krista Davis does it again! It was so nice to visit Holly and the gang in Wagtail, again. I couldn’t guess the killer, which is always a major plus for me. The characters are great, the setting is someplace I’d like to visit if it were real, and I’m so glad to see a certain couple together! I’ll continue to preorder anything by this author!

GREAT. GOOGLY. MOOGLY. First, I need to say that I love this series. And this one was really good as there seems to be multiple things going on at once and you have to try and figure out [along with Holly] if they are connected or all separate incidents. Add all the fun animals, their owners and all the antics that they can get up to, and then of course, M U R D E R [naturally], this becomes both a fun book and a WHOCANITBEIHAVENOIDEA kind of book. Because, for the first time in a L O N G time [one of the last cozies I read, I knew the who and why by chapter 5; NEVER a fun or enjoyable thing], I had absolutely NO CLUE [though I should have thinking back on it today] who the killer was OR the why. HOW glorious. I love it when that happens. Makes the reading experience even better. At least for me. ;-) This is a fun and enjoyable read with plenty to keep you guessing and to keep you wondering and to keep you thankful. You will understand that last one once you have read it. This was a fun trip to Wagtail. As usual another event has brought people to the area and Inn in support of animals, of course Holly and Oma are on board until there is a death that seems to tie locals and visitors. Is someone trying to make a local judge crazy??? Are the ladies sponsoring the events and friends of the judges wife who passed part of the problem or part of the answers ? Time will tell!

(Goodreads) Review: Big Little Spies, the seventh entry in Krista Davis’s Paws and Claws series, is a pure delight with its complex twisty murder mystery and ideal pet lover’s setting. I have to admit it, the Paws and Claws series probably has my favorite setting of all of the cozy mysteries I read. Wagtail, Virginia, is a tourist town that caters to pets and their owners. There are no cars allowed, every business relates to pets in some way, all of the restaurants have menu items specifically for four legged companions, and even the protagonist’s Sugar Maple Inn allows pets to roam free and has rooms with themed monikers. I adore it all in its over-the-top-ness and so wish it was a real place. I would pack up my corgi and head that way in a heartbeat. If you obsess over your furry family members like I do, this is the mystery series for you. In Big Little Spies, Holly finds herself once again embroiled in a murder investigation when she and her beloved terrier Trixie stumble across the body of pet detective Seth Bertenshaw. When Holly finds out he was poisoned and that he has ties to several of her current guests, she cannot help but put on her sleuthing cap. There are a couple of subplots expertly intertwined with this murder, making the puzzle all the more difficult to solve. There are so many secrets to uncover, suspects with plenty of reasons to want Seth dead, and twists and turns galore. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong, and I did not see the killer’s motive coming. As much as I admire author Krista Davis’s writing and ability to construct an intricate head-scratcher, I love these characters even more. Holly is a friendly, trusted, reliable main character, and the supporting cast, including the various guests and pets, are realistically well drawn. I know Holly and I could be great friends, and I enjoy Rose and Aunt Birdie so much. There are quite a few new characters in this book that are easy to confuse until you get to know them, but I did not find it too difficult to keep them straight (there is a handy list of characters in the front of the book if needed). Big Little Spies is an outstanding addition to the Paws and Claws series, and I highly recommend it to any cozy mystery reader, especially those who enjoy animals that take center stage. I cannot wait until my next trip to Wagtail.

The ladies and their pets have all checked in at the Sugar Maple Inn and Holly, Oma Liesel, Zelda, Mr. Huckle, Gingersnap, Twinkletoes, and Trixie are making them all feel welcome. But they are concerned about another precious pup. The Geman Shepherd of a local retired recently widowed judge is missing. His housekeeper has called in a pet detective but before he can return the dog to the judge, Trixie, Holly’s rescue dog who has a habit of finding dead bodies, finds a dead pet detective. It seems the detective has connections to several WAG members. There are also several strange things happening that put other lives in peril. It’s time for Holly and Trixie to find out what the heck is going on including who killed the pet detective. I absolutely love the pet-friendly town of Wagtail. With a new puppy in the house, who we love to take everywhere with us, Wagtail would be a perfect vacation spot. Even a dead body or two is an issue because I love a good mystery and would do anything I could to help Holly crate a killer. The core group of characters, human, canine, and feline, are so cleverly crafted. They all have huge hearts and love catering to their guest’s needs and having Wagtail become a great tourist destination. They are all engaging and genuine. I get such a kick of Holly jumping on a golf cart and being quickly followed by Trixie and sometimes Twinkletoes. The pets are not just window dressing they are vital to the story. We are introduced to several new characters and their pets. I love that Ms. Davis knows this may be confusing at first so she graciously includes a complete list of characters before the story begins. The WAG ladies are a diverse group with their own issues and secrets. They spend a lot of time together and know each other’s quirks and how to work best together but even they don’t know all of each other’s secrets. The judge and his housekeeper also play prominent roles. They also have issues and secrets. The story unfolds at a very fast pace with subplots tightly tangled with the main mystery/s. There is truly a plethora of suspects with a variety of motives. Twists and turns muddied my thinking several times and just when I thought I had the killer leashed another twist sent me off in another direction and still I was barking up the wrong tree. I was gobsmacked when everything was revealed. The author plotted out a fantastic mystery. In addition to the marvelous characters and the mysteries they were wrapped in the Sugar Maple Inn serves up a menu of delicious food for its guests. The pet-friendly versions are really interesting and thought-provoking. We don’t prepare special meals for our pooch but there are some great easy-to-make options included in this book. I just may have to try some of them out. A pet cookbook with the recipes from this series would be fun. Big Little Spies is a delightful addition to this series. The title truly fits. I do get a little melancholy when I reach the final page of books in this series because I really enjoy spending time with these characters. I can’t wait to return to Wagtail. This visit ended much too soon.

In short: A pet detective gets murdered in the adorable little animal-friendly small town of Wagtail and everybody—all 5,698 characters—is a suspect! So I might’ve exaggerated about the number of suspects, but dang, there’s a LOT of people and pets to sort out in this confusing mess of a mystery. It’s up to the local innkeeper Holly to sort through the massive list of suspects because you know the local law enforcement ain’t worth hill of beans in these cozy mysteries! What I liked: I quite enjoyed the cute little touristy small town setting with all the pooch-themed shops and eateries. If this place existed in real life, I’d certainly put it on the ol’ bucket list. I also love, love, love everything about this cover. The adorable Jack Russell throwing off the side-eye at a hoity-toity society event just cracks me up! What didn’t work: Judging by the hundreds of rave reviews on Goodreads, I’m the odd girl out here, but this book just didn’t do it for me. There’s just way, way, way too many names to keep up with, and I found myself re-reading pages and sifting back to previous chapters to figure out who’s who. First you have a group of women in the WAG high society club, then you have the assorted townies—and then if that’s not enough, there’s a bunch of animal names thrown in the mix! The multitude of red herrings confused matters even more! I know that’s the whole point of a red herring, but the tangled web of family feuds and romantic trysts were a little much for my tired, overworked brain. I thought cozy mysteries were supposed to be easy, relaxing reads! Favorite characters: Of course, Twinkletoes and Trixie are my most favorite characters—Fritz the loyal German Shepherd comes in as a close second! As for the humans, I most enjoyed Aunt Birdie because, quite frankly, she’s not boring. Sure Grandma Oma and Holly are sweet and all…sweet like a bland vanilla ice cream cone. Aunt Biride’s kind of a tool,, but she seems to have a soft underbelly and an interesting backstory. Overall: If you love formulaic cozy mysteries with sweet Mary Sue sleuths and furry, heroic sidekicks, this book’s for you. Just keep a notepad handy so you can keep the characters and complicated storylines straight!

This is my first book by Krista Davis. I've heard tons about her books. Everyone raves about them and the fact that they include animals had me at the word go. So as soon as I could get an arc for this book I was thrilled. I love the town of Wagtail and everyone in it. Seems like such a homey place. Almost kind of like Mayberry but with way more perks. The idea of a pet friendly hotel where all your critters get to roam around with you is purely genius. I wish something like that existed in real life. Everything was just fantastic. I loved that the weapon the killer used was so unique. I don't believe that I have ever seen that in any other book before. Loved that aspect. Loved the multiple mysteries rolled into one. So many scandals! I enjoyed this book so much. Krista Davis is absolutely wonderful in her creating of worlds with words and how fleshed out her characters are. I really loved Holly and Holmes. So cute together. I really hope there comes a time when those two actually get married. I did not see the murderer coming. I thought I had it all pieced together and then things kept changing. It really kept me on my toes! Wonderful. A very exciting book. I loved that all of the animals had their own personalities and were able to do what animals do but to be able to showcase it in such a way that showed off how intelligent critters are. I absolutely adored this book. I am going to just buy them all and then read from the beginning. So, far, some of the best written in animals I have read. Absolutely fabulous. I could not put it down. I received this ARC from NetGalley to read and review. All opinions are my own and completely honest.

I never get tired of spending time in Wagtail, VA with Holly and her grandmother, Oma. Together they own and run a pet friendly Inn in a very pet friendly town. Holly is owned by her pup Trixie and her cat, Twinkletoes. In this, the 7th of the series, everybody is getting ready for a big gala fund raiser for pet adoption. Even the pets are decked out in finery. Twinkletoes sports a tiara. People have come from all over and there is a group of women who are friends and arrive as a group. Besides the usual luggage, they bring secrets with them. Judge Barlow has been a widower for only six months and he has become the romantic focus for more than a few local ladies, including Holly's Aunt Birdie. When the judge's beloved dog goes missing, his housekeeper hires a pet detective to find him. Leave it to Trixie to be the one to not only find the missing dog, Fritz but also the dead body of the pet detective, dead by poison. Several threads run through the mystery and all are nicely tied up at the end. I like to read series in order but this is one that can stand alone no matter which book you pick up. Each one is full of great characters, wonderful pets, a lovely setting and a puzzle that will be sure to keep you guessing. My thanks to the publisher Berkley and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

It seems the PI had a connection to all the WAG ladies and they’re now all under suspicion. With Holly being a seasoned amateur sleuth by now she sets out with her dog, Trixie, and cat, Twinkletoes, to catch a killer. Time is running out as the killer continues to terrorize the town and more people end up hurt. This was an incredible mystery with so many twists that I didn’t see coming! I didn’t know who the killer was and the author wove an intriguing and intricate tale of mystery. The end was a surprise and the path along the pages kept me wanting to read more. I love the town of Wagtail that caters to animals. Holly makes a perfect main character with her kind heart and stubborn curiosity. The people of Wagtail are likable and quirky. Krista Davis sparks imagination with this wonderful town, relatable characters, adorable animals, and a well written mystery. I am already looking forward to more books in this series!

Frankly, I was disappointed in Krista Davis’ latest effort. I have enjoyed her books in the past and was looking forward to reading her current effort. On the other hand, I found the book somewhat boring. The cast of characters was long - with people, cats, and dogs, all playing significant roles This problem was addressed somewhat by including a list of 22 characters before starting the story proper - where she intermixes people’s and pets’ names. The town of Wagtail was an appropriately named North Carolina village including water access, parks, and stately homes. The village catered to its pets allowing them open access to most areas, except for the local hospital. I was surprised the county health inspector allowed pets to enter and eat at restaurants throughout town, which provided specialized menus for cats and dogs. The book concludes with a series of recipes - read these carefully, some are suitable for pets, some are suitable ONLY for people. One pet recipe includes a potentially poisonous ingredient for dogs. It is clearly labeled but requires a careful reading of the peanut butter label before use. I give the book three stars. ______________ This review is based on a free electronic copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. The opinions expressed are mine alone.

They are in Wagtail to host the "There is No Place Like Home" Gala Ball. In the middle of all the hustle and bustle Holly received a call from Rose Richardson, the grandmother of her boyfriend, Holmes Richardson. Rose asks Holly to visit the home of Judge Grant Barlow; his dog Fritz is missing and the Judge needs Holly's help. The Judge tells Holly that his missing dog is not his only problem, he is being harassed. Later, Holly meets Seth Bertenshaw, who is the pet detective hired to find Fritz. At a party for the WAG ladies at Rose's home, Holly finds Seth's lifeless corpse. Who killed Seth Bertenshaw and why is the main mystery of this book. This was an interesting mystery, because the more information Holly found out about the victim, the more the suspect list grew. Everybody seems to be hiding multiple secrets and past actions may have come to roost. I look forward to the my next visit to Wagtail. Thank you Netgalley and Berkeley Publishing Group for this ARC.

Once again I found myself in the fictional town of Wagtail, the place I wish with all my heart was real so I could live there. As the story unfolds we find out some interesting history involving first one then another and another of these lovely ladies that connects them to Wagtail and to each other. There are seemingly other murder attempts made on the lives of a few others as the attempts to bring a killer to justice just keep adding to the suspect list. When the evidence points to one of Wagtails most loved and respected citizens, can Holly find a way to clear her or is this woman actually a cold blooded murderer? I kept changing my mind about who was guilty and must admit that I was VERY surprised at the end about who it was and story surrounding their motive for murder and attempted murder. I enjoyed this book and once again find myself wishing Ms. Davis could pull the next book because I love the stories she created and I can't wait to go back to Wagtail!

The series is set in Wagtail, a town that has reinvented itself as a pet-friendly vacation destination where people can bring their pets - which are allowed everywhere and never get into scraps with each other (although some hissing may occasionally surface). I admit, all these dogs and cats off leash causes me some anxiety. I'm always worried that someone will get lost. But the author does an excellent job of quickly keeping readers up to date on where the primary pets are (and that they're safe). The main character is Holly, whose rescue dog Trixie has a nose for dead bodies. If someone is murdered in Wagtail, Trixie will be the one to find them! A missing pet, a murdered pet detective, and a group of women in town to help stage a giant pet adoption event, provide enjoyable intrigue. The author does a good job of dropping clues here and there, but I was still kept guessing regarding "whodunit" until the very end. The author provides a list of characters at the beginning of the book. You will probably find this as helpful as I have - there are a lot of characters to keep track of!
