My son (11) and I quite enjoyed this book. It had pirates, sabotage, and triumphant heros. What's not to like for a young boy? My son (11) and I quite enjoyed this book. It had pirates, sabotage, and triumphant heros. What's not to like for a young boy?

This book is so well-known and has seen countless TV and movie adaptations that we're all familiar with the story. Sadly, I felt it lacked heart, it was written somewhat like a chronicle and while I prefer being to the point, I don't really like it in a story (excluding Hemingway). The sea language for me was difficult and I couldn't understand half the things the pirates said. If I would have read it at a much younger age and were unfamiliar with the story, I would have probably liked it a little better.

The theme of this book would be Adventure, because the main character finds this map and is destined to find this island. He has to take on Pirates, He has to guard and take over a ship. He even has to save some lives. He comes across another guy named Long John Silver who will do anything for this map.

A decent introduction to the story for extremely young readers with some pretty good illustrations. Sort of like a more enjoyable Spark Notes version.
