When reading fiction (and narrative non-fiction) I like to employ the Time Machine test. A book passes if it stirs up emotions in me so strong that by the end of it I am aching to literally jump into a time machine and go visit that world (or Earth's equivalent, if the book deals with other worlds). DRAGON'S HOARD, I'm thrilled to say, passed the Time Machine test. This was the best of the series. I particularly enjoyed Stewart & Riddell's version of a dragon. Quite refreshing! (But I won't spoil that here.) I discovered the all-star team of Paul Stewart & Chris Riddell when I was a young kid, in the form of the first book of THE EDGE CHRONICLES. I instantly fell in love, and have since read 11 EDGE CHRONICLES books, 3 FAR-FLUNG ADVENTURES books, 4 BARNABY GRIMES books (written in the same format as the Free Lance series, only better), and now the 3 books in the FREE LANCE series (called A KNIGHT'S STORY in America). I believe that Stewart & Riddell are two of the greatest story tellers for children, and I urge you to check out any of their works. I myself still need to read their 3 new EDGE CHRONICLES books, 3 WYRMEWEALD books, their MUDDLE-EARTH books (LOTR parody!!!), and their new SCAVENGERS series. Yes, I am a huge Stewart & Riddell fan. But if you read any of their books, you would see why. My favorite line in DRAGON'S HOARD: "With a mouth dustier than a monk's cloister, and a thirst to match, I headed for the nearest inn."

Free Lance and the Dragon's Hoard was a book I eagerly got out of my library many years again, after I binge read Stewart and Riddle's Edge Chronicles series. I didn't care that it was for a lower level readers than EC was, I just wanted to read more from Stewart and Riddle. Free Lance must steal precious items from the dragon's horde, and maybe even slay the dragon if it should so occur in that situation. I read this one pretty quickly, and honestly I was a little disappointed. I didn't care that it was for a lower level readers than EC was, I just wanted to read more from Stewart and Riddle. Free Lance must steal precious items from the dragon's horde, and maybe even slay the dragon if it should so occur in that situation. I read this one pretty quickly, and honestly I was a little disappointed. Maybe it was because I was fresh off of reading EC but I felt this lacked a little bit. My heart didn't race, the story was quite rushed and, remarkably, I found Riddle's illustrations to be quite unforgettable. I only just happened upon this book and decided to review it when checking to see if Stewart had released anything new on here. The Free Lance series is definitely one for younger readers who like adventure and magical creatures. Not for older level readers who like a good fantasy. I still wish I had managed to enjoy this more than I did. Truly a shame.

This is the last in the Free Lance series and my least favourite. It is a fairly standard knight-in-shining-armour tale. A town scared of the dragon that causes them trouble, a damson in distress and a handful of shady characters and people of poor ethics. Chris Riddell's illustrations are excellent as ever, the story is well told, but very formulaic, certainly not a patch on the team's best work. It wraps up the series and is worth reading if you have read the other, better, two before it. As wi This is the last in the Free Lance series and my least favourite. It was on par with the previous two adventures, a bit too bloody in certain places, but high paced enough to keep any reader engaged, even if reading isn't really their thing.
