The removal of inconvenient rivals is a way of life in the violent and war-torn nation. Rafe Stoner has forged a broken life as a deadly capable gun for hire, half owner of a brothel and sometimes proprietor of a machinery parts operation. He uses the latter for a cover, the former as his major source of income and the brothel as a distraction and place to live. He seems always in a lethal situation where life & death are a coins toss away & he does not seem to care if he wins or loses unless a personal friend is threatened. Rage exposes the very ugly side of existence in post war (oxymoronic statement if ever was) Afghanistan. He has only one major consideration before he will take on a contract...is this person so bad...so evil he deserves to die. There are a few recurring characters, Greg & Farai Blum, Ahmed & his two sisters who were adopted by the Blum's upon the murder of the boy's father. Ivan the Terrible an American posing as a Russian drug & arms lord who in reality runs a CIA intelligence gathering post. There are typos here and there but it happens, however what does not ring true is in every book he gets romantically involved with beautiful women while undertaking a contract in combat situations. This is not even remotely plausible and takes away from the story. There is plenty of action and will mostly appeal to military readers active or retired. I would prefer if Eric would keep it more realistic but I suspect his editor(s) are pushing him to throw this nonsense in. I recommend this series as I enjoyed it for the action & insights into Afghanis country & it's people. It is an escapism for me as well as a returning to familiar military actions. I follow along with Google Earth & a search engine to look up locations, weapons, vehicles etc, that are being visited or used in the stories. It takes more time but is worth it to me.
