It wasn't great or anything but it was a fun enough read. Madeira, or Maddie as she is most often called, is an interesting main character with a lot of quirks. The way she talked at times was a bit over the top but other than that I liked her. The mystery itself was interesting and I especially liked the visions that Maddie was having of previous women wearing the same wedding dress. It was definitely a cozy mystery with nothing too over the top but a fun read nonetheless. All in all, I would recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers who enjoy reading about fashion as well. As for myself, I'll be reading the 2nd book at some point but I won't be rushing out or anything to grab it. Good but not great :)

A successful New York City fashion designer, Madeira Cutler, is asked to return to her small hometown of Mystick Falls in Connecticut to help her baby sister plan her upcoming wedding. When she arrives home, things aren’t going very well for her sister, Sherry. When she arrives home, things aren’t going very well for her sister, Sherry. Her soon-to-be mother-in-law is taking over the wedding preparations and isn’t very concerned if the preparations are to Sherry’s liking or not. To make matters worse, her mother-in-law-to-be is seeking the advice and assistance of Sherry’s fiance’s former girlfriend, Jasmine. What a complete slap in the face! Madeira has not intentions of letting this slight against her sister go by without a fight. When Jasmine continues to make nasty remarks and has a list of enemies a mile long, it’s no surprise when she’s found strangled to death. Unfortunately the murder weapon was the veil to Sherry’s wedding gown. All fingers point to Sherry as the prime suspect, but Madeira is not about to let her sister go to jail she didn’t commit. Along with her detective boyfriend, Nick, they conduct their own investigation. Madeira has always had a love of fashion, but when an antique wedding gown gives her clues to the murder, she’s beyond shocked. Visions begin to take hold of Madeira as she uses them to learn the truth and clear her sister’s name. This is the first book in Annette Blair’s “A Vintage Magic Mystery” series and I absolutely loved it. It was a quick, fast-paced, light, read that just left you smiling. It’s a sweet mystery and everything I want in my cozies – a little mystery, a little romance – all rolled up into one nice story.

"A Veiled Deception" is a murder mystery with 'shades' of the paranormal by Annette Blair. Fashionistas will enjoy the attention to detail and name-dropping while mystery lovers will like the heroine who always seems to put her best shoe forward. Madeira is back home. She's returned for a visit, but mostly to design her baby sister's wedding dress. Her visit is apparently none too soon as the groom-to-be's ex has shown up and is trying to hijack the wedding...with the assistance of the groom's mother! When the pesky ex turns up dead, Madeira vows to chase down the real killer to keep her sister off the list of suspects. And there appear to be plenty of people who would have loved to kill the victim. Between hunky copys, sexy old boyfriends, getting visions from old clothes, and trying to finally come to grips with her mother's death--Madeira certainly isn't bored. I enjoyed reading "A Veiled Deception". I found it fun and funny if a tad shallow. If you're not a fashion hound, there will be alot of dialogue that won't 'work' for you. My own aversion to name-dropping likely also played a part in my distaste for those sections of the dialogue. Prada, Manolo, Louboutin--it's all about the shoes...and purses. There are lots of suspects, plenty of clues, but without the author's final reveal there was no way to put them all together. So even though I liked the mystery portion, I'll likely not go out of my way to read another.

This was a lot of fun. I like the characters and the setting and can’t wait to see what happens next. The mystery was good and I liked how past events were woven in with the present. I also love how Madeira curses, oh scrap.

I loved this book, which really surprised me because much of it concerns fashion, both current and vintage, which I have no interest in. [Hey, it's not entirely my fault - I grew up in a time and place where 'haute couture' meant your jeans and your sweatshirt were both clean at the same time...] But the author sold it to me and I actually found it very interesting. The heroine, Madeira [call me Mad] Cutler, head design assistant in a New York fashion house is called home to Mystic Falls. Officially she's supposed to help her youngest sister plan her wedding and unofficially she's supposed to make sure there is going to be a wedding at all. An old friend of the groom has shown up and is acting like SHE is going to be the bride. Not good but Mad can fix anything - which turns out to be a very good thing when she stumbles over the corpse of the usurper strangled with Sherry's wedding veil and it looks like little sister is the prime suspect. Of course she plans to fix this by finding out who really did the deed. To this end she snoops, she gossips, she pulls strings - all while going up against Detective-Sergeant Lytton Werner. The same Werner who in third grade she called 'little wiener' in the school cafeteria - a nickname he has never escaped even when he became a 6+ foot hunk. And, yeah, he still blames her. He considers her his own, personal thorn... And then her life gets really strange - it seems that besides being able to see ghosts [her family home is a haunted 250 year old inn] some vintage clothing gives her glimpses into their past owner's lives. While she finds this spooky and disconcerting, it does help her solve the current crime [and sheds much needed light on past crimes as well.] She finally breaks down and tells Nick, her on-again-off-again boyfriend, FBI agent and brother's partner, about the visions and eventually he comes to believe her. The trick is how to get the good detective to look in the right places without explaining how she got the information and without a lick of proof - because she is definitely NOT telling him about the visions! All this is going on while Mad is having her own personal crises - she decides to quit her job, buy the old carriage house/hearse barn and turn it into an upscale [very, very upscale] dress shop selling high end vintage clothing and her own designs which will be named Vintage Magic. It comes complete with yet another ghost - one that is handsome, charming, and fond of chatting with those that can see him. A word about the sex in this book - there's sizzle but all the actual contact takes place 'off screen'. Vintage Magic Mysteries 1. A Veiled Deception 2. Larcency and Lace 3. Death by Diamonds 4. I'm really giving this a 2.5. I liked it, and I'll be interested to see what Ms. Blair does with the series, but I had a few problems with it. I hate books that are loaded with designer or brand names. I don't know the names, nor wish to, so I know I'm missing whatever points are supposed to be made with their presence. Their presence also dates a book. Ms. Blair employs a fashion/sewing-based vernacular for her protagonist, Madeira, and a little of it is cute and amusing, but it's used too heavily and becomes a contrived irritant. I like most of Ms. Blair's style, however, and will probably try some of her earlier titles. And I have to give myself points for trying this, as I'm not usually very adventurous about trying new authors.

The first in the series of a single, fashionista girl who, at the very least, has psychometric abilities and, at most, a witch that sees ghost, this book is easy and light to read. Madeira gets visions from the past from the vintage clothes she touches, which made her think whether those are real or she is, as her best friend Eve would say, a nutcase. When her sister, owing to her sister's rivalry with the dead girl, becomes the prime suspect, Madeira takes it upon herself to clear her sister's name with the help of the vintage clothes that give her visions. That becomes the major question in the novel--the who, what, and why of the murder. There are other "small" mysteries, though. Like whether Madeira and her on/off "boy toy" will ever get serious or they'll be perpetually dancing the fire dance, flirting, fooling around, but never settling down. Or what she wants to do with her life and a work that she doesn't like anymore, not because she doesn't like fashion, but because of the cutthroat world where fashion thrives. All in all, it's a fine start for a series. Breezy and light even though I know nothing about fashion. It's not an overly serious mysterious novel and there are chapters and chapters where solving the murder is not even mentioned. But these allow the characters to be established and find more ground. It's a cozy read, which perfectly befits the genre it's in. For anyone who wants a light read that doesn't consume all brain cells, this is a good book to pick up.

I'd probably give this 3 and a half stars if that were possible. It's an interesting little murder mystery with some ghost sightings thrown in. The thing I enjoyed the most about this book was the turn of phrase the author used. This is how the book starts: “My father would never have asked me to take a leave of absence from my job in New York City if he could have handled my sister’s wedding and the “Jezebel” plotting to preempt it without me. I thought the characters were fun and interesting. And again, her use of the language delighted me over and over again. There was nothing I found offensive and I enjoyed the suspension of belief to follow Madiera on her journey.

There are several more books in the series and they would probably be an enjoyable way to pass the time.

It has all the chick lit touches that make it fun to read, shoes, clothes and old boyfriends. It also has a pretty decent mystery that keeps you turning the pages. What really grabbed me though was the sly humor that often made me chuckle. The other charm was the author's ability to create a feeling that these people really knew and cared for each other. A sense of home, if you will.

I'm a big fan of Ms. Blair's Accidental and Triplet Witch series ~ so much so, that I pre-ordered the first book in this new series several months ago. My anticipation was not in vain. A Vintage Magic series starts out with a fun, if a little bit darker (a murder to be solved), fast-paced read that is full of ghosts, romance, suspense and humor. I instantly liked the character of Maddie and I'm hoping for more of her in the next installments. As an avid "collector" of vintage items myself, I found this to be a unique and fascinating storyline.

Maddie Cutler goes home to CT for her sister's impending wedding. But at a party in their family home, a woman is murdered. And her baby sister is the suspect. Then she finds another talent she has besides fashion design - sometimes the vintage clothes talk to her. And visions of the past, along with support of family and friends, she learns the keys to the crime lay in the past. Very fun read, with loads of great fashion quotes and descriptions. I loved Madeira and her name. I love that clothes "speak" to her and her passion for vintage clothes as well as her other "gift". I also love her unyielding love for her family and her inability to not be heroic. It also helped to have a hot male named Nick Jaconetti to put a little sizzle in the mix. I like the story it was original and interesting. I loved all the different lives being intertwined and how it all got resolved in the end, cuz I'm a sucker for a happy ending.I can't wait to read I loved Madeira and her name. A unique and imaginative story from one of my favorite authors. I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it since I'm not usually into 'mystery' novels. This book had enough other elements (romance, paranormal, historical fiction, plus literature and fashion references) to keep me fully engrossed until the last page. I finished it in a few hours but still felt satisfied in the end. Started on the second book in the series immediately. Its no secret my love for Annette Blair. I wasn't going to read this book. The cover didnt do anything for me, and as we all know, I pick my books by the cover most of the time. But I loved Blair's other books, so I picked it up. I devoured this book in two nights. She did an excellent job as usual with making a connection with you and the characters. I will definitely pick up the next book in this series.

Maddie (real name Madeira--all her sisters are also named for wine) has been working as a fashion designer in New York, but she comes back home to Mystick Falls to help with her sister Sherry's wedding. She reconnects with her off and on FBI agent boy friend, meets the groom-to-be's wealthy family, and gets in touch with her paranormal powers. Also contains directions for making a purse! Does this book have everything or what. Read for 2009 Spring Challenge 5.7 Recycled to my sister

Good, fun read. Pretty standard cozy mystery fare: amateur investigation into a murder sparked by fear a loved one will be accused. Madeira's psychometry gift added a unique element. I loved the relationship between Maddie and her family, but the fact that she raised Sherry after their mother's death was overstressed. Lots of fashion talk, some interesting, some not. I will be adding books in this series to my TBR, but they probably won't go to the top of the list.

Madeira returns to her hometown for her sister's wedding. Her sister's rival is murdered at the engagement party and Madeira (Maddie) finds the body and the motive for the muder as well as the murderer. Along the way we meet her friends and the rest of her family. Turns out Maddie is a witch, the daughter of a witch and is gifted with psychometry working with vintage clothing. She decides to leave her job as a fashion designer and deciding to open her own vintage clothing store in her hometown.

Great start to a new series. I actually read the 5th book in this series first and liked it so much I decided to catch up on the rest of it. I'm tempted to go back and revise my review of the fifth book, because the beginning of this series is a much stronger book than the fifth. Lots of elements make this a fun cozy for me - the relationship between siblings, the possibility of a love triangle, and the paranormal elements that don't overwhelm the story. Highly recommend for fans of cozies.

“The right dress can be magic; the wrong one murder! From the national bestselling author of Sensations Witch series comes the new Vintage Magic mystery series, featuring Madeira Cutler. While opening her own vintage clothing shop, Maddie must clear her family’s name,” This was an o.k. read --- the town, city, characters were all interesting, liked how the past fit in with the vintage clothes but I had to work at finishing the story --- thus a 3 rating!
