If you wish to know more about Superman & co, and you're unsure where to start, the catalog will help you. There are also a few iconic comics presented, along with comments from the media. I was pleasantly surprised to see some that I've already read. Also, I marked as to read some that sounded really good (I am especially impressed with Vertigo. I'm not sure I read anything and I'm considering V for Vendetta or Preacher, Volume 1: Gone to Texas as a starting point). I like the darker, edgier feel to Vertigo. You'll also find a section dedicated to upcoming movies and TV shows, again, with comics recommendations. Bottom line is I highly recommend the catalog. *Copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

It is very obvious to anyone who has met me that I am obsessed with everything DC and I'm uber fond of Marvel. So, when I got the chance to read and review a graphic novel from the DC collection I was over the moon excited and I hopped on it immediately. I received this book for free through Netgalley for an honest review. Review: The first comic was The Flash and he is holding this exact graphic novel in his hand. It's quite amusing, and it's totally in the Flash's realm to do this. He's always a comic relief!!! The artwork is impressive in this initial comic, which impressed me. The Flash discusses the comics that will be featured within the novel all while saving the day!! What a great way to start a graphic novel!! This graphic novel is an introduction to the DC comic book line up and I definitely suggest it to anyone trying to get a basic start within this massive series of comic books. You get a little pinch of many titles and this can help readers figure out which comic book characters and series are best for them! Every comic book character/series has a different tone and might not match every reader so it is important to be informed! Some of the comics/characters introduced within this series: Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Justice League, Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad as well as collectibles, suggested reading orders and back list (plus an ordering list!). Each series is described and showcased at the beginning of this graphic novel. For example, the Watchmen are given a description for a general reader to understand what they are about and some of the characters. This series is described as grim and psychological realism - this can assist readers who do not want a gritty, real story to make an informed decision on what series to read or delve into. Readers also get a sneak peak at artwork and covers, which showcases the illustrators wonderful artwork! Some of my first comic books I became interested in were just because of the artwork - you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but sometimes that introduces you to books you never thought you'd like! Some of my favourite parts of this graphic novel include: The Batgirl art and comic book - oh how I love her! Batman: The Killing Joke - I have this graphic novel, but I always love seeing it pop up everywhere! It's perhaps my favourite graphic novel of all time (so far...). Justice League Origin Vol 1 Cover - I love superhero team up covers! Everything Harley Quinn - I love this character, and seeing her pop up made my heart swell!! I try to pick up every comic book and graphic novel I find involving her! DC: The New Frontier - this Justice League comic book has a very different art style than the typical Justice League stories, so it was great to see this line of comics shown off within this graphic novel. DC Universe: Rebirth - Again, seeing the different styles and editions makes a great introduction to new (and old!) comic book enthusiasts! Injustice Gods Among Us - For fans of the video game, there is in fact a graphic novel with the same name!! Gotham Academy - I had never heard of this series before I noticed it in this book! So I'm pleased to see a small introduction floating around! Aquaman - I have so many Aquaman comics hiding in my house, how could I not love seeing him showcased in this graphic novel?! Birds of Prey - For those not introduced to the Birds of Prey, it follows some of the major female characters in the DC universe. Girl power!! Nightwing - I haven't seen as much of Nightwing lately as I would like to, so a splash of Nightwing makes my day! Red Hood and the Outlaws - Another great character I haven't seen floating around as much as I would like! Teen Titans - For a very long time I have been obsessed with the Teen Titans, yet I've only seen the animated series getting more attention than the fantastic comic books. Modern Classics section - While the old graphic novels are fantastic, some of the newer graphic novels and comic books have been hitting me the right way. Seeing a whole section on this fantastic selection is great in my eyes. There's also a little introduction to the current Zack Snyder film universe and DCEU on television and the comic books that influenced them/readers could enjoy. Overall, I thought this was a great introduction to many comic books. This graphic novel would be fantastic for anyone wanting to get into the DC universe but not knowing where to start! I wish I had this when I started my obsession in June 2016!! Five out of five stars. Side note: I am now using the selected backlist to make sure I read in the correct order and not purchase second copies of comic books and graphic novels. How helpful!!!

Read this review and more on my blog. I received a free copy of DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 in exchange for my honest opinion. You would not believe how excited I was for this. I know that that probably does not make sense as this will rarely change with the ‘must read books’ as they have been around for a long time. But I always find it interesting to see what DC has released and if any of the previous years releases will have been good enough to make their way into this. Also, with DC reboot their comic books last year with their Rebirth initiative; so the layout will have to change from the previous years as the New 52 had been running from August 31 2011. I am very proud of myself to be able to say that I have read quite a few books that appear in here now! This time last year I had read a grand total of 0 comics that I had read, of how it has changed since then. Also, reading DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 reminded me of some graphic novels that I plan on reading soon, like The Killing Joke and Preacher to name a few. I was very glad to see recommendations based on the DCEU movies coming out in 2017, Wonder Woman and Justice League. Even thought their first three movies may not have been critically well received (I personally loved Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad), their is no doubting that most people are rooting for DC to get it right. Even if you read DC Essential Graphic Novels 2016, I would still say read the 2017 edition as it is a good way to remind yourself of a potential reread or one you mat have not gotten around to reading yet. And if you have not read any of DC Essential Graphic Novels, then pick them up! They are a great way to make sure that you do not get confused as to what you should read.

Though I expected only that, it offers much more. The authors give detailed timeline and outline of specific superheroes. There are also other lists like reading list for all DC novels and so on. On top of that, the book is free and I am pretty sure I'll be coming back to it often.

I love how in depth the author went to explain stories that are vital into getting into the D.C. Universe. It was very easy to read the different synopsis of each comic series. Also adding in what others have said about each one was also helpful in getting someone interested in these wonderful characters. Just the idea of a book that helps you locate what to read in order to jump into this world is amazing to itself.

DC Essential Graphic Novels 2017 is definitely a very helpful guide to people new to DC comics. People like me who are just familiar with the world of DC find this catalog a pleasant companion in the quest of finding that satisfying origin story. People like me who are just familiar with the world of DC find this catalog a pleasant companion in the quest of finding that satisfying origin story. I use the word satisfying since our favorite heroes had been "killed" and "revived" countless of times by different writers and brought to life with their own renditions by different artists. It's nice to note that by the sheer number of pages in this book will make you see the differences in the artistic styles of different artists. What I'm surprised about was that I really don't care how simple the drawing style is (DC: The New Frontier) so long as the storyline is epic. I usually go for the more detailed art, that shining shimmering splendid work of colors. And like what the bromance duo Ben Affleck and guest pointed out in the latest Oscars, The great Alfred Hitchcock was once asked, "What are the key elements of making a memorable movie?" He said, "To make a great film you need three things: the script, the script, and the script.'" Review posted on: Zirev.com I'm geared towards the story over art so I'm really grateful for the 25 essential graphic novels which you'll see right after The Flash's comical skit in introducing what this book is all about (not counting the contributors' page and table of contents). I'm surprised really when The Flash made the introduction instead of the Amazonian warrior right on the cover. Perhaps, it should be Flash who's on the cover instead of Wonderwoman. Well, that's just my two cent. The Flash is definitely hot right now on TV. The blurbs by various reviewers are just both overwhelming and intimidating that I'm at a loss for words in how to even review this book. How am I supposed to top those? They're really helpful though and they shape what emotions I'm supposed to feel for each graphic novel even before I get to lay my hands on them. For example, I think I like the grimdark and gritty Preacher. Being from a religious Roman Catholic country, despite having my views changed when it comes to religion now that I'm an adult, I can't help but go back to being a helpless child and feel all this darkness and fear when it comes to the talk of angels and demons. For Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exile, I'm reminded by the fiction of the fictional stories of Grimm's fairytales of the TV hit series, Once Upon a Time. I remember loving the animated film, Flashpoint so much with its go-back-in-time/change-the-future Flash plot and for the first time, I saw Batman cry. And that's in front of The Flash. I think I'm going to like Gotham Academy since the Nerdist described it as having a touch of manga. In all honesty, I prefer manga over comics (unless the graphic novel has the influence of the style of manga) because manga elicits more emotions whereas the style of comics is more plot-driven and action sequences. The manga has a lot of breather where you get to be suspended with a simple dialog with a background image that sets the mood. It's as if the manga has its own background music. Dark Knight: A True Batman Story was scary and harrowing. I was instantly taken to my old dose of horror manga when I was 12. I miss what it was like to be naive and easily scared (because I love to be scared, just not with terrorism). What's scarier? This graphic novel is based on a true story. As a new DC comics fan, if you're dedicated in diving into the world of your chosen superheroes, there are pages with suggested reading order. Look at this page about Batman: There are tons of other golly goodness in this book. Take the plunge and enjoy your entry into the world of DC Universe or shall I say Multiverse.

This is a great catalog of the titles DC Comics is releasing in 2017. I have just started reading DC comics this year, so I liked this overview of everything they publish. There are many choices in here that I probably wouldn't have known about otherwise. Many of their older, classic titles are in here too. This catalog is great for new readers and older fans of DC Comics. I received a copy of this catalog from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

I enjoyed going through this. It was a great guide to know and having the knowledge of what comics were starting new in the rebirth and having a description of the comic along with its title and release date is incredible. I enjoyed that it also had comics from both DC and Vertigo listed. I liked the collectibles page. And I really appreciate the recommended list for reading order. I plan on using that. There are so many different story arcs even with the major characters that it's hard to get it all straight without a guide. This catalog is presented in vibrant colors and is very well designed.

First off, great cover of Wonder Woman reading a comic while easily winning a tug-of-war against a bunch of guys, including Superman and Batman. After an intro with the Flash stopping a comic book store robbery, there’s 25 Essential Graphic Novels; quite a bit of Batman, but I like that Gaiman’s Sandman was included. Each major character gets a page, but not much info. Even Suicide Squad shows up, no doubt because of the recent movie. There’s a section on Page to Screen, starting with Wonder Woman, also as expected considering that movie will be out soon. TV shows like Supergirl, Flash, Arrow, and a couple of my faves—iZombie and Lucifer—are here as well. Wow, MAD magazine! And a section on collectibles. There’s also a large section at the end, over 30 pages, that lists a recommended reading order, plus a selected backlist, but if you’re that much into comics it’s stuff you should already know. As a catalog it does its job. As a guide for those entering the comic book world, it’s good too. Just don’t expect it to be an actual BOOK.

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review This review and more was published on my blog Swissbookworm A lot of people would love to start reading comics, but are overwhelmed with the amount of comics and graphic novels already out there and don’t know where to start. This catalog is a fantastic way for newbies to create their first impression of our beloved DC world. As a total newbie in the comic departement you should have no trouble getting an overview of the superhero world by DC and finding some awesome stories to begin with. By no means do you have to begin at the very beginning of the first comic to have been published. This catalog gives you a lot of great suggestions based on the different superheroes and highlights the greatest comics in the series. The recommendation of the reading order also picks out a red line which you can follow whilst following up with your favourite superheroes. From my personal favourites such as The Flash, Batgirl, and Superman to the other “Big Stars” like Batman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman, all are covered in the catalog and introduced shortly. As a huge DC fan myself, I now know exactly which soon-to-be-released Graphic Novels I’m waiting for (im)patiently and which ones I still have to buy that have been released in the past. With a creative layout and short commentaries I enjoyed reading this catalog as much as the actual comics themselves and the introduction story at the beginning starring The Flash and The Rogues is a beautiful way to start a catalog and makes it so much more alive.
