I read this “James Joyce’s Early Fiction” for an introduction to James Joyce’s work. It examines “Dubliners”, “Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man” and “Ulysses”. The initial chapters examine the artist as passive observer, as judge, mediator, hero and egoist. This work contains some quotes form the works but for the most part studies the roles of characters in the various works and the continuity between them. This short, but not quick, book reminded me of high school and college English classes and why I chose not to major in English. I plan to read the books they studied and perhaps I will appreciate this tome better after I do. At this point I would have to say that it was difficult to follow and I remain in doubt as to whether it was worth the time and effort to get through it.
