Deader Homes and Gardens By: Angie Fox Narrated by: Tavia Gilbert This is another great book in this hilarious series of ghosts and murder! There is also a great mysteries, wonderful characters, (both undead and dead), fun plot, and made me giggle a lot! So fun! The narrator is fabulous, she cracks me up! So I really enjoyed this book and loved watching Verity commit to being a ghost hunter and heading straight into a job. I think the best part of the book though was that Verity really handled much of this book on her own. Ellis was very much a supporting character in this story versus being with her for all the adventures and Frankie was just plain not willing to help. The mystery was fabulous and very different from what I expecting with a book series being so entrenched in the southern culture. The mystery was fabulous and very different from what I expecting with a book series being so entrenched in the southern culture. Mummies and Egyptian curses was a great addition to Sugarland’s already rich history. Verity and Ellis relationship is still too cute for words and I enjoy how accepting he is of her and Lucy the skunk. I guess by only issue with the book and why I didn’t give it 5 stars is new dynamic to Verity and Frankie’s relationship because I personally felt Frankie was a total ass in this book and his last minute pep talk to Verity seemed very out of place for him considering how he treated her throughout the rest of the book. His whole reluctance to be even remotely helpful seemed very out of character for him based on the past books. I understand being tied to Verity’s property is a drain on him and honestly I’m kind of ready for that to be over. Angie Fox did a fabulous job of describing the house and grounds of Rock Fall mansion and it painted a very detailed in my head. The other good thing Angie does is keep Verity true to her character and I love that. The character has stayed consistent throughout the four books and hasn’t started to annoy me yet which usually happens by now in most series. I also have no complaints as Tavia Gilbert has now become the voice of Verity and I will accept now substitutes. Concerns: Either give her a good steady job with income or paying clients cause after this fourth book if I have to read about Dollar Store Ramen noodles I think I’m going to scream.

It's fun to get back in the world of Verity, ghost hunter and just alround good girl. This southern miss has standards and a big heart but sometimes boy does she take a wrong turning! Yet somehow in spite of family strife and the appalling financial circumstances Verity is left in she doesn't wallow, no she just keeps plugging away, see? An alround good girl! So Verity has a unique problem and that's the fact that she somehow connected to Frankie , a ghost and at times the bane of her life. This gangster is just starting to realise that being undead might have perks and knows exactly how to yank Verity's chains! Finally Verity has a bonafide case and with a little help from Frankie ( sheesh who am I kidding?) it's time to make some money . It's going to be fine because ghosts like Verity or do they? There's genuine evil at the Treadwell mansion and Verity might not be able to save anyone not even herself! This is light on the romance front and if honest I find Ellis to be a bit boring. Still I can't fault that he is finally out in the open as far as his relationship with Verity goes. Verity is kind of blinkered at times and just doesn't always see the danger she puts herself in and I must admit this story had all kinds of interesting twists. The Egyptian angle was inspired and I could easily understand how the author found inspiration. Expect to be surprised as sometimes bad guys hide in plain sight though. What truly elevates this series is the grumpy yet manipulative Frankie. He and his 'associates ' are a scream and it's always fun to read. His grandfather was an Egyptologist and Lee thinks there are significant artifacts in the old mansion. Oh, there also appears to be a disgruntled family of ghosts in Rock Fall mansion too.

This is a 4.5 star read. A fun, sweet, clean and scary read featuring my favourite cosy, ghost hunting sleuth Verity Long. Verity is back and in this episode she has taken on the job of dealing with a whole houseful of angry ghosts that haunt a cliff top mansion. Deader Homes and Gardens is great. Entertaining, good fun, characters you love...all of that. Angie Fox could keep pumping stories like this out and people will buy them. I hope she doesn't. I hope Verity doesn't become another Stephanie Plum (20+ books and no progression). I hope she becomes Violet Parker. 4 Stars because it's great, minus 1 Star because i Verity is back and in this episode she has taken on the job of dealing with a whole houseful of angry ghosts that haunt a cliff top mansion. All Things Urban Fantasy One of the genre tags on the Goodreads page for DEADER HOMES AND GARDENS is "cozy mystery" and that is a very accurate description for this book and in fact, the whole series. It's the type of when you're looking for a 'scary but not pants-wetting scary ' book to read on a cold October evening. I got through this book in one sitting as it's a very quick read and has an interesting mystery that kept my interest enough to want to see what the resolution would be. I love when a mystery doesn't make the reveal so glaringly obvious in the first few chapters and keeps me guessing. I enjoyed seeing the story of the haunted houses' ghostly inhabitants unravel during Verity Long's first ghost-hunting job venture. It seemed to get more complex as more information was revealed. Verity's ghost talking powers are kind of limited so far as she has to connect with her ghost companion, Frankie to use them. This issue is brought up in this story as a B plot but it doesn't resolve this limitation that much. Verity and Frankie's relationship is fun and I love that he hasn't moved past his 1920s gangster ways. Verity is a fun character who has gone through a lot in her life especially with having to put up with being the town weirdo who 'sees ghosts'. DEADER HOMES AND GARDENS was a fun and spooky little mystery that fits well for a light read. I am looking forward to what spooky missadventures Verity and Frankie get involved in next.

I'm pretty much digging this series. Verity is determined and spunky. Her ghosts are...well, they all have their quirks. Her main ghost is certainly not the most reliable at keeping her safe and sane, but he has a good heart under all his bluster. Also, he throws some darn good parties. You know, for a ghost. Oh, and *thumbs up* on the hunky boyfriend. It pays to have a guy who isn't afraid to enter an abandoned house with you AND who knows a few tricks of the trade. This particular job puts Verity in the line of fire on more than one occasion, but she's not one to give up when there's a mystery to unravel. Four books and a couple of short stories in and I'm thoroughly enjoying my time spent in Verity's world. She's still trying to find her footing with her sudden career change, but she's got enough determination to see her through. Let's see what the next adventure brings. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

Deader Home and Gardens by Angie Fox is the fourth book in The Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery series. Verity Long has given up her graphic design business and has become a ghost hunter. So far, though, she has not gotten any clients. Verity has kept herself busy by helping her boyfriend, Ellis Wyndell decorate his home. So far, though, she has not gotten any clients. Verity has kept herself busy by helping her boyfriend, Ellis Wyndell decorate his home. They are trying out new curtains when she receives a call from Lee Treadwell. Lee states he needs Verity to come over immediately. Verity is excited to have her first client. She heads home to collect Frankie, her gangster ghost and link to the spiritual world, and heads to Rock Fall manor (Lee’s ancestral home). It turns out that Rock Fall manor is haunted. A tragedy occurred after Jack Treadwell (Lee’s grandfather) brought home artifacts (that were said to be cursed) from an Egyptian tomb in 1910. The whole family died within a short period. Jack, Annabelle (his wife), Charlotte (his young daughter), and Robert (his brother-in-law). The governess survived but she suffered severe burns from a fire. The son survived but only because he was living in New York at the time. Lee has been living in the caretaker’s cottage on the property. He has never entered the manor house. Rock Fall is crumbling and needs major repairs. In order to accomplish that task, he needs to enter the house. Lee needs to find something of value that he can sell. Verity needs to find out why the ghosts are hanging around. In order to accomplish her job, Verity needs Frankie’s help (his power). Frankie, though, is not happy. He dislikes being stuck on her property, and has decided that having fun might free him. He wants to have his friends (his bootlegging, gangster friends who like to shoot off guns, gamble, and drink) around. In exchange for Frankie’s help on the case, Verity agrees to let him have use of the back porch (you know Frankie is going to take advantage). When Verity discovers Egyptian artifacts in the dining room of Rock Fall manor along with Jack’s journals, she calls in her old college professor, Dale Grassino. Dale is excited to read the journals, but he never gets the chance. He dies in the study. Did one of the ghosts kill him? Verity is even more determined to find out what is going on at Rock Fall manor (the ghosts have been very secretive) and get a happy ending for Lee and the ghosts. Deader Home and Gardens was a delight to read. I love the antics of Verity and Frankie (Frankie is quite a character). Ms. Fox does a remarkable job at creating characters that the readers can relate to. The mystery was interesting as well as complicated and had a good twist (I do not believe everyone will see it coming). The ghosts or spirits were a nice mix. Some were scary and creepy while others were friendly and endearing. Deader Homes and Gardens can be read as a stand-alone (but why would you). Angie Fox gives the readers the background information on Verity and her situation (how she ended up with Frankie and dead broke). I do, though, recommend that you read the previous books in the series (they are highly entertaining). I give Deader Homes and Gardens 4.5 out of 5 stars (I did solve the mystery). The ending leaves the reader desiring more. I just wish we did not have to wait months for the next installment!

This series is so much fun with loads of ghosts and a wonderful plot that keeps the pages turning. The camaraderie between Verity Long and Frankie the gangster ghost gets even better with each book and this one may be my favorite so far. They may be stuck with each other but there is no denying they make a great team. You can't go wrong with this humorous paranormal mystery that may even give you some chills along the way. I simply adore Lucy because she is a unique pet and has her own personali This series is so much fun with loads of ghosts and a wonderful plot that keeps the pages turning. This is by far my favorite book. Verity is helping a friend named Lee who has a haunted house. The house is full of Egyptian artifacts. I loved the suspense and mystery to go along with the hauntings. It's also sweet how her and Ellis are progressing with their relationship. I was intrigued by all the finds Verity is getting to see. I didn't quite like this one as much as the previous books in the series. I felt like it didn't get going until very late in the book, but once it did, I enjoyed it. I also didn't like Frankie's attitude in this one. His behavior and then 180 turn didn't quite make sense to me. But I still love the series and am looking forward to the next book. This was a really good one, with just the right amount of creep factor. The audio book narrative was maybe a tad melodramatic, but it didn't take away from the story. Frankie was the usual funny yet grumpy ghostly sidekick, providing some much-needed comic relief. Looking forward to the next one! Southern gal ghost hunter, quirky small town and residents, colorful ghost companion, swoony Sheriff's Deputy flame, ghost-riddled mansion, cursed family, and Egyptian tomb treasure made my interest perk right up and stay there. Verity was a heroine that I enjoyed though there were times that I shook my head over her lack of self-preservation. She's bubbly and an all-around nice girl. She's at the stage where she's making the most of the circumstances that have her tied to a ghost. Instead of getting down about being the town kook, she wears that t-shirt with pizzazz. This is her first job in her new business after doing it all for free in the past. I admired how intrepid she was and concerned for the interests of all involved. This was great fun with the humor splashed on liberally, but also had a pretty gritty ghostly mystery, too. I was nearly hyperventilating in one scene (take that with a grain of salt since I'm a wuss about scary stuff). The mystery had me curious and I had pieces of the solution, but not the entire thing before the reveal. I experienced this story in audio edition. This was my first time with Tavia Gilbert for a narrator. I enjoyed her voice and her storytelling style. Her general narration voice is soothing without being soporific. She nailed the humor and had me figuratively chewing my nails during the scary crazy moments in the haunted mansion. I thought her Frankie the gangster ghost was perfect. She didn't over do the gangsta schtick, but got the wry pragmatism. I'd definitely listen to more of her work. All in all, this was a great first outing with a new to me author and series. I've got book one ready to go and would push this one at those who enjoy cozy mysteries that shade a little dark blended with the paranormal. My thanks to Audible for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Verity Long has dealt with ghosts in Sugarland and had more success than she has had with her graphic design business so she has put out a shingle as a Ghost Hunter. Fortunately for her, Ellis, her beau, is helping her out with decorating his house while she waits for a paying client. The owner of Rock Fall Manor, Lee Treadwell, calls Verity and asks her to come over immediately. Rock Fall is a century old mansion that is haunted. No one has been inside the house for almost 100 years and Lee wants to fix it up. When his Grandfather, an Egyptologist, brought back artifacts from a find that were supposedly cursed, he, his wife, daughter and brother-in-law all died and the treasure disappeared. Verity takes on the case, much to the chagrin of Frankie and Ellis. There is a lot going on in this case. This is by far the darkest of the books in the series. The ghosts are evil and do not want nyone in the house. They attack the "intruders" on every occassion. Will Verity be able to calm the spirits and help them to find peace? What happened to the family? Where is the treasure? Verity has a lot of questions to answer. When the story unravels, I was surprised at the ending and that it was all brought about happily. This is another fun paranormal mystery. Frankie has a lot of fun in this one, Verity has a tougher time. Ellis was not in this one as much as previous books. I am happy to see their relationship growing, but Ellis is something of a dud. He supports Verity, but there is not a lot of sizzle there, maybe in the next books. Overall a fun series and this one is no exception. Pick it up if you enjoy a cozy with a paranormal twist. The publisher provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Deader Homes and Gardens by Angie Fox A southern style ghost mystery. I love the humor in this paranormal mystery series. Quite a few laughs and even a feel good tear in the resolution. Sparky. Excerpt: “For most of spring, and now into summer, my newfound ability [ghost hunting] had been the talk of Sugarland, Tennessee, population 17,606. As a result, I’d endured a parade of drop-in visitors curious to see if poor Verity Long was indeed three gallons of crazy in a two-gallon bucket. At least my neighbors all hailed from the South, where you didn’t drop in without a dish in hand. I’d filled my freezer near to bursting and had been fork-deep in everything from Missy Forester’s Coca-Cola glazed ham to Kimmy Barker’s turnip greens with salt pork. The homemade bonanza was almost worth the prying questions. But not quite. Truth be told, I’d been hiding out at Ellis’s place a lot. Not even fried green tomatoes warm out of the pan were worth one more random knock on the door that led to an uncomfortable half hour of small talk. Especially if it was with someone I hadn’t seen since the church potluck in fourth grade, and it ended with a “bless your heart.” That was Southern for “yep—you’ve got problems.” Excerpt From: Fox, Angie. “Deader Homes and Gardens.”

The more I read books from Mrs. Fox the better they get. As always Verity and Frankie (her resident gangster ghost) have a running commentary that is comical. This new case though, even Frankie doesn't want anything to do with it because it creeps him out. He draws the line at dolls. So Verity will have to do this alone with Lee, the descendent of the family who is trying to improve the property and looking for famous artifacts that were brought back by his grandfather a week before he passed aw The more I read books from Mrs. Fox the better they get. He draws the line at dolls. So Verity will have to do this alone with Lee, the descendent of the family who is trying to improve the property and looking for famous artifacts that were brought back by his grandfather a week before he passed away from what Lee believes to be a curse. Verity has been scared before but this might be the worst and she just might hang up her hat after her first "official" ghost hunting job. She has just got to try one more time because normally ghosts like her once they realize she isn't there to harm them. In this adventure she meets the family of the descendant, including the governess and the gardner, but do they want her here or not? Her relationship with Ellis is progressing and she feels very lucky to have him by her side and to have someone who will listen to all her crazy thoughts and shenanigans. But both Ellis, Melody, her sister, and Lee, the homeowner, at some point during this investigation tell her it isn't worth it. But she's never been one to give up when she knows that she could make a difference and here she believes she can. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The spooky hilarity continues in this the 4th book. Verity has declared herself as an official ghost-hunter and has her first job, investigating an egyptian curse in long abandoned mansion where the entire family died. While her sleuthing continues, Frankie has set up a ghostly speakeasy on her back porch - just to keep every aspect of her life in an uproar. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. However, I do wish Verity would finally start making some regular money. It is getting beyond the ability of my imagination for her to continue living, all this time, on less than a hundred dollars. My only complaint in four books of excellent entertainment and storytelling.

Verity, Lucy, Frankie and Ellis are back in the 4th installment of the Southern Ghost series. I love reading about their adventures and this time there's a whole house of ghost dead set against their investigation. You'll want to read the previous books to catch all the nuisances and the towns characters. Verity, Lucy, Frankie and Ellis are back in the 4th installment of the Southern Ghost series. In my opinion you can't go wrong reading Angie Fox's Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series--and this installment was as good as the previous three. These are fun books with a lot of great characters and very interesting situations! When a man hires her to dispel the ghosts in his family mansion, she discovers murder, treachery, and deceit that may reach from the past into the present when a new body turns up. Can she unravel the mystery of who killed the family members, why the governess alone survived, and how to defuse the curse before her spirit joins the others in the house? It’s nice to see Verity’s relationship progress with her cop boyfriend. A playful romp, Deader Homes and Gardens is a wacky mystery that will keep you on your toes. This title is book four in the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series.

This is the creepiest of the series so far, but it is creepy in a good way! Verity has her first official ghost hunting gig, and it is a doozy! Lee Treadwell want's the ghosts gone (or at least calmed down!) so he can either do up or sell the family property, there is just one tiny problem, err an ancient Egyptian Curse that struck down his Grandfather, Grandmother, Aunt, Grandmother's brother and eventually the Governess!  In order to get Frankie to let her see the other side she has to promise This is the creepiest of the series so far, but it is creepy in a good way! Garilous Gardens and Patio Parties Frankie the ghost is being a pain, all because he wants to get the old gang together ( to do whatever deceased 1930 gangster gangs do ). What can she do when none of them seem to communicate with each other, let alone her!

2.75 stars. The slow moving romance between the h and her man continued to be cute and sweet. The mystery was interesting and surprising enough. However, the set of circumstances that the h can’t control is starting to make me annoyed. She just reacts to everything, bumbling along and making the best of things. I feel nit picky, but I guess I wanted her to be more proactive and less of a doormat with her nemesis (who thankfully didn’t make an appearance in this book), the townspeople, and her gh 2.75 stars. Verdict: I’m going to continue on with this series after a week or two break. :)
