As a 'collected works' volume, any rating or review would apply to Edgar Allen Poe's short fiction and poetry as a whole, and given that the oeuvre has some ups and downs, this is likely to end up either deceptive or a bit vague. That said, he clearly has a knack for short fiction, and a deft hand with macabre or grotesque subject matter. His use of language is harder to judge, given that to a modern reader the simple fact that his style is centuries old is likely to give his work a distinctive, formal quality, but clearly the man was well read and an unusually skilled wordsmith in his own time. There is a quality to some of his work that suggests he is trying very hard to induce a thrill of horror in his audience with the device of having this reaction reflected by the narrator or characters of the story, and to a fan of modern horror their responses may seem artificial or hyperbolic, given the accompanying exposition. He's much more likely to hit his mark, though, than later 'pulp' authors of the early 20th century.I list the book now because I've been led to reread particular selections of it rather than the whole thing straight through, but simply skimming the titles calls to mind the details and impressions left from previous readings, a prompts me to give this recommendation to anyone in the appropriate mood: It's a body of work from an excellent (and, fortunately, prolific) story-teller, and if his work is best suited for reading alone, late at night, especially in the autumn or winter, I think it's worth the concession. I have to wonder if, in the summer months, sitting on a bench in an old graveyard wouldn't hit just the right note.

I had this book for quite some time now on my TBR list, it was given to me by my mom because she see an owl and thought it was something related to Harry Potter. This book contains 7 tales and my favorite was "The Gold Bug". I end up giving 2.4 out of 5* to this book just because the tales are so little that i could not really appreciate much any of them (besides the gold bug that is a lot bigger than the others). I will try and read more from this author since i like his style but i think i will go with a bigger book.

This particular collection/selection of Poe works may not be available PER SE, but Poe works are widely available in various formats and collections. Adding to my TBR. Read a few stories and enjoyed, not sure why I haven't read more yet.
