Chaotic and distracting to readers of any level Awful layout for a book for kids. Way too much going on on every page. Lego characters suggesting things to build, others making jokes, others giving tops on how to care for the ocean, and so on. Crazy book.

Capitalizing on the popularity of LEGOs, Scholastic has paired the models and minifigures with real-world adventures to create a new reading program with mixed success. In Deep Dive, beginning readers are join the LEGO minifigures on a journey to the bottom of the sea, where they encounter sea creatures, learn ocean facts, and find LEGO building ideas. The main problem I have with the books in this series are the layout - they are extremely busy and disjointed. Real world photographs and factual text are paired with comic strip drawings of the LEGO figures and their own thought bubbles which clutters up the page - am I reading the factual text, am I following the LEGO story or am I expected to do both at the same time. There's just not enough factual information to make it useful for reports and not enough engaging storytelling to make the LEGO adventure very interesting. LEGO fans might enjoy the novelty of the book, but it may soon wear off once the included stickers are used up.

This new series from Scholastic is sure to be a hit! Though many of the underwater creatures have been highlighted before in other books, the way they are presented is new. Children will enjoy the Lego touch. I like that there were several "Build it" Lego challenges that tied into the ocean theme. Parents could encourage their child to read and then create and a have an hour or so of "no screen time". Great idea and fun book. This new series from Scholastic is sure to be a hit!
