Today was the day: I cried over a poetry collection. This has history facts, author biographies, goodbyes and heartbreaks. Completely crushed my soul. It might be because of my love of Ireland, but I adored it with all my heart. What a beautiful, beautiful book.

This collection was a revelation. Fitzgerald curated it with finesse and heart and it was incredibly moving to read. The illustrations were stunning and the biographies succinctly informed the poetry. This is now my prized possession and I have now found my new favourite poem of all time: Comrades (To Con), by Eva Gore-Booth. This is now my prized possession and I have now found my new favourite poem of all time: Comrades (To Con), by Eva Gore-Booth. The peaceful night that round me flows Breaks through your iron prison doors, Free through the world your spirit goes, Forbidden hands are clasping yours. The wind is our confederate, The night has left her doors ajar, We meet beyond earth's barred gate, Where all the world's wild rebels are. Other poems I loved from the collection were: - A Terrible Beauty is Born - W.B. Yeats - The Wayfarer - Padraic Pearse (Written on the night before his execution in Kilmainham Gaol) - Salutation (To the memory of some I know who are dead and who loved Ireland) - George William Russel - Let me Carry your Cross for Ireland, Lord! - Thomas Patrick Ashe - The Foggy Dew - Canon Charles O'Neil Other Facts I learned from the biographies: - Joseph Plunkett undertook a cloak-and-dagger mission to Germany to negotiate with their government to smuggle arms back into Ireland across Spain, Italy, and north Switzerland for the rebellion. - Eva Gore-Booth (Sister to Countess Markievicz) devoted her life to the suffragette and trade union movements. Yeats admired her work and they had a lasting friendship. - Padraic Pearse was born on Brunswick street which is now named Pearse Street. - This quote from Pearse's speech over the grave of Jeremiah O'Donovan in Glasnevin Cemetery: 'They think they have pacified Ireland. They think that that have pacified half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.'
