4.5 stars. I love hockey. I mean, being from Chicago you pretty much have to. (Go Blackhawks!) I had to give this picture book a read- it looked too adorable to pass up. I'm really glad I did. This book is absolutely perfect for little sports fans everywhere. First, I have to say that this book is just cute. From cover to cover and everything in between, this book is just adorable. First, I have to say that this book is just cute. From cover to cover and everything in between, this book is just adorable. This book tells the story of a little hockey fan enjoying a hockey game and all the hype and excitement of a home team victory. The illustrations are really well done and detailed, with bright colors. They go well with the story that's being told, and do well to keep your attention on the story. Also, and this was a pleasant surprise, it rhymes. That made me really happy, and added another level cute to the whole reading experience. It has come to my attention that this book is a part of the Sports Illustrated Kids Bedtime Book series. I haven't read any of the other ones, but having read Goodnight, Hockey, I know that will definitely change in the future. As the publishers agree, I'd recommend this for younger sports fans, aged roughly 4-7. I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.

Cute Story For Young Hockey Fans I'll admit: I know next to nothing about hockey other than the immense talent it must take to play it. However, I have a young family member who is obsessed with hockey, and I read this book to see if it's a good fit for them. I can say without a doubt that it is. The art is beautiful and the story has a nice rhyming scheme for a bedtime book. Need a break from Goodnight Moon? This is the perfect story to share at bedtime with the little hockey fans in your life. Illustrations are fantastic – especially loved the one where the puck “flies like a rocket” as it looks like it is going to soar right off the page.

Following in the footsteps of their previous sports related bedtime story, Goodnight Baseball and Goodnight Football (which I reviewed here almost a year ago), Michael Dahl and Christina Forshay bring hockey fans their very own goodnight story, Goodnight Hockey. The season for these young fans will not begin until October 7th, but they can fall asleep to and dream about their favorite team starting August 1st when this title will become available. You can pre-order now from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I have to admit, I have never been to a hockey game. I live in Texas. Our sport is football. However we do have some very dedicated hockey fans here. The Dallas Stars have won seven division championships, won the Presidents' Trophy and the Conference Championship on two occasions, and dare we forget they won the Stanley Cup in the 1998-99 season! They are in the top ten when it comes to arena size (19,200 capacity at the American Airlines Center), so we MUST have a decent number of fans. I believe Goodnight Hockey will become the favorite bedtime story of young goaltenders, wingers, centers, and defencemen. The colorful illustrations and rhyming text will inspire wonderful dreams of pucks sliding across the ice, slapshots, hattricks, and last second winning scores.

About the story: The story starts with a family being together at an ice hockey match, sipping hot chocolate as they watch the game. Hockey terms like "slapshot" and "hat trick" are introduced and the whole book is written in a child-friendly rhyme. It ends with the family going back home and putting their son to bed in his hockey-themed bedroom as he goes to sleep hoping for hockey dreams. Sports Illustrated scores a goal with this Hockey themed Bedtime book. Being a Canadian, hockey is our national past time, I loved this rhyming story. With terms like "hat trick" and "slap shot" being used and defined by the wonderful illustrations, it will even teach non-hockey fans a little about the game. In the story a family is at the arena watching the local team play. Of course they win the game and the family goes home happy. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. As a hockey fan, I thought this book was cute and fun. The rhyme and pace of the writing is great for reading aloud, and I think it would be great for holding the attention of young children. It is very reminiscent of Goodnight Moon towards the end. However, if the readers are unfamiliar with the sport, some of the content may be lost on young readers. There is not enough detail for those unfamiliar with the game. Review from Raising Fairies and Knights This book is all about the game of hockey. As a Canadian I am supposed to love hockey, but I don’t. As a result I do not love or hate this book. My toddler likes it, but doesn’t ask for it regularly. I would not buy it for myself, but would if I knew a hockey fan who read to a toddler. http://www.raisingfairiesandknights.c...
