A secret so big that he is willing to lose his abilities to save himself and the sexy shifter that just walked into his life! She is supposed to bring him in, he is the enemy, but nothing is as it seems. The story line is right up my alley and pulls on every heart strings I have at my disposal! <> Sigh… Kristen Painter's writing is awesome as always!! I am a huge fan of her urban fantasy series and was elated when she announced writing paranormal romance with one other of my favorite authors for Sin City Collectors. It was refreshing to feel the development of the story unfold without the element of sexual tension. You can feel Claude and Jason fall into a smooth rhythm together as the story line developed and I was so sad that it ended so soon. I hope we get a glimpse of them in future stories. Maybe get another novella. Queen of Hearts was magic. PUN INTENDED. The novella was well written, the characters are 4 dimensional (meaning I could feel what they were feeling like it was happening to me - awesome writing x 100) and the world was in perfect harmony with the one created specifically for the Sin City Collectors Series! The creativity was off the wall! Teeeeee Heeeeee! Especially since the creature chosen in this novella was the gargoyle! I enjoyed the brief glimpse of the gargoyle mythology from Painter and can't wait to see what other creatures we encounter in the city of secrets... I tip my Nerd Girl hat to you, and then I take it off and bow to your greatness. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this novella, the second in the new Sin City Series, for review purposes. My only complaint would be that it was over too quickly. The characters fly off the page and they are SO unusual. I read a LOT of paranormal books and this series is all about NEW mythology, bringing to the page creatures that in the past have been overlooked or just act in the background. Queen of Hearts is like a sensationaltrip through Vegas. You have magic, you have theater, and of course you have passion! Kristen does an incredible job of bringing everything together and writing a real page turner. Fans of my reviews will know that I am NOT a shifter fan but even THAT couldn't stop me from loving this one! A well earned 5 out of 5 stars from me! V""V

I bought all three of the Sin City Collectors stories written by Kristen Painter because I absolutely LOVE (and highly recommend) her Nocturne Falls series and Jayne Frost series. This is the first of the three I've read and it did not disappoint. It was a bit sexier than her Nocturne Falls and Jane Frost series but nothing super sexy (I'm not saying there is anything wrong with super sexy books, just including this in case other fans pick these up for the same reason I did). I really enjoyed that even though this series is made of short stories (around 100 to 125 pages or so) this story felt like a full book. Nothing was rushed or left me to try to peice anything together. I look forward to reading the other two by Kristen Painter in the series and will probably check out the stories from the other authors as well.

There's not as much action as there was in the previous Sin City Collectors installment, Amanda Carlson's Aces Wild, but I absolutely loved the action scenes that are there. Unfortunately, my favorite one is at the very end and would be way too spoilery to talk about. The romance is more sweet than steamy with the characters engaging in some charming banter throughout. This series also continues to impress me with its unusual creatures. I don't think I've ever read anything with a grimalkin and I could count on one hand the number of gargoyle heroes. There's even a broody wraith! That, in addition to its unique supernatural bounty hunter premise, really sets Sin City Collectors apart from all the other PNR out there. The authors are adding on to the Collectors' world a little more with each novella. I really enjoyed the authentic Vegas feel of the magic show in this one, as well as the opportunity to learn a little more about Hellhounds bar which first appeared in Aces Wild. I'm having so much fun with this series, trying to guess which characters will pop up in the next story and how they'll all be related. But you don't need to read them in order, I'm just obsessive that way. Can't wait to see what these authors come up with next! I received an advance copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I've really enjoyed this series so far. My biggest complaint is that the books are too short. I think these stories and characters are strong enough to have full length novels instead of the novellas. I feel that the romance is rushed a little bit, but that is to be expected with a shorter story. I really enjoy the characters, even the villain is a great antagonist. In this new series, we are taken into a world of paranormal creatures that either are apart of the Collectors or they are the ones being collected. The Collectors jobs are to bring in the offending supernaturals to the boss (but no one knows who the boss is really), without any questions. Unfortunately, the one collector in Queen of Hearts is supposed to be retired, but the boss wants her apart of this collection. Claudette Marchon is a very unique shapeshifter and she doesn't tell everyone what she really shifts into. It's something she feels will scare people away, and maybe even the collection will not want her. Her mission in Queen of Hearts is to collect, Jason Tennant. He is a gargoyle (which this is my first book I've ever read about a gargoyle) and he is one unique character. Jason is to be brought in for stealing the Queen of Hearts necklace, and Claudette will do anything to find the necklace and collect the gargoyle. She's going to have to become an assistant to crazy magician though to complete her collection. It's not going to be easy, and she'll eventually find out the real truth of why she was chosen for the collection. Kristen Painter's Queen of Hearts is another page turned in the Sin City collector series. I finished this book within a day (periodically between doing college assignments). I know…I should be working on college assignments, but I need a dang break every once in awhile. This book can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend you read these books in order. I'm loving the fact each book is going to be written by other authors, and Kristen will have another book in the series later on this year. There is a certain character in this novella that caught my attention and here's hoping he gets a book. =) I wish this book was a little longer, though because I needed more of this sexy gargoyle, Jason. I loved how Kristen described his qualities in the story and I also adored Claudette, even though it did bother me about her keeping her shapeshifting ability a secret. But…I could see why she didn't like sharing at the end. I give this book 4.5 moons, and highly recommend it to paranormal romance readers out there that want to read something much different from the other PNR books out there. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Kristen Painter is yet another of the fabulous authors who contributes to the Sin City Collectors! Queen of Hearts is her first novella in this fantastic series! Her retirement came with the stipulation that she could be called in if necessary and the mysterious Boss has claimed it necessary. Jason Tennant, a gargoyle, has stolen the famed Queen of Hearts--a necklace that's worth a LOT--and the Boss wants Claude to bring in Jason and the necklace. Going undercover, she soon learns that there's a lot more going on then meets the eye. Such as Jason is being held prisoner of a sort by a magician. Having just read a gargoyle novel, I was delighted to see another in this one! Jason was one hot hero! I loved that he had a complex background, well, complex enough! There's always more than meets the eye in Sin City! And that goes for Claude as well, she's got her own secrets and buried past. Jason was a total badass in some ways, but then he had a softer side that came to light where Claude was concerned and it was completely endearing! As with most novellas, the pacing here was pretty quick. It didn't move so fast you couldn't keep up, but just a nice fast paced so there are no dragging moments! There's humor and romance spread throughout and a good dose of suspense as well! This one didn't end like I initially thought and that was a pleasant delight! Filled with some pretty good action, juicy paranormal bits and of course some sprinklings of hot romance, this is one novella series that just totally rocks! And I am sure it will continue to rock with the other authors' contributions as well! I gotta find out who the next author is and the title! My Review: This is a new paranormal series being written by a group of authors. Because paranormals are a bit unusual, they tend to hang out in Vegas so the Vegas Collectors stay very busy. This book is about a Collector who tried to retire two years ago, but I don't think you ever really can break your connection or loyalties to the Collector network, so Claude is called back in. This former show girl is awesome...I loved how self-assured and tough she is. This is not a girl that you can mess with and she had definite chemistry with Jason. The problem is that he's the guy that she's supposed to be collecting. But she quickly realizes that there is much more to the story than anyone knows. Jason is a gargoyle and although I know there are a few stories out there that feature these creatures, this is the first one that I remember reading. I loved getting to know a new paranormal creature and let me just say...hmm, I do think I like gargoyles. Jason is an awesome character. These stories aren't very long. They all feature their own characters and HEA's although some of the characters make cameos in the other stories. But they are great, fun reads. Think paranormal bounty hunters...seriously, I love the premise. So far I've completely enjoyed the two that I've read and am definitely anxious for more from the series.

She smart and funny and he knows life will never be the same, espivally once he finds out who she really is. Claude is sassy and a smart ass, she's funny more capable than people give her credit for. She's also one to follow her instincts, even if they might get her into trouble every once in awhile. Jason is a good guy who got screwed. When he meets Claudette he follows his heart and trusts her even when it's risky. They each have secrets, but if they allows themselves to trust things could end up better than either ever hoped for. Great read. I enjoyed the story and the paranormal aspect was interesting and well done!

This is actually book2 in the series but I had no problem at all diving in and being swept away on the adventure of recovering the Queen of Hearts Necklace, which has been stolen. The "Collector" given the task was a very intriguing character and I hope that I get to read more about 'Claude' the 'Feiline' Shifter with a secret, and of course 'Jason' The Gargoyle she is sent to collect. Other than Frankenstein the movie that had Gargoyles in it, this is the first book I have read that had one as a character, and I must say I am eager to read more. I love PNR I mean my nerd Girl name is #NerdGirlParanormal! so I now need to add Kristen to my Must read Author list. The writing flows really smoothly, we get to meet and learn enough about the characters to be invested in them and the plot runs along with enough detail and excitement that you are not left wanting after it ends, this is something that is hard to do in a novella... that fine line to getting enough detail in the allotted amount of words. One of the side characters has also caught my eye, and I hope we find out more in the future about the Wraith Collector :D Thanks again to Nerd Girl for directing me to another PNR / Urban Fantasy writer, I love finding new authors to read.

I really enjoyed Amanda Carlson's Aces Wild, the first novella in the Sin City Collectors series, and had high hopes for the second novella, Queen of Hearts, written by Kristen Painter. Unfortunately, I wasn't as engrossed in this novella as I was the first in the series. While I thoroughly enjoyed Claude and Jason and loved that the focus remained on unusual supernatural creatures (Claude is a rather unique feline shifter and Jason is a gargoyle), there was just something missing for me. I felt the connection between Claude and Jason and the plot surrounding their meeting was spot-on, I just felt a little let down. While I consider myself a huge fan of Ms. Painter's work in urban fantasy, I can't say it translated as well into romance. When I read romance, I'm looking for more than just chemistry and innuendo, I want smexiness and there was no smexiness to be found in Queen of Hearts. While fade to black scenes are common in urban fantasy, it just does not work for me in romance. All-in-all, Queen of Hearts was a fun, fast-paced read and I enjoyed learning more about the Sin City Collectors world. I just wish it had read more like paranormal romance instead of urban fantasy. That being said, I am more than a little intrigued by Ares and need more of him. Now. *COPY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR HONEST REVIEW*

4 stars Queen of Hearts is the second installment of Sin City Collectors Novella, written by various authors (so far just two). I had read Aces Wild, the first novella written by Amanda Carlson, and quite enjoy it, since it have some new myth (hellhound shifter) and the story is fast packed. Queen of Hearts is my first foray into Kristen Painter work, and I'm glad she didn't disappoint. I like the banter between the heroine, Claudette Marchon and her significant other, Jason Tenant. Claudette aka Claude is a feline shifter, but she's not ordinary shifter. She is a Grimalkin, a rare kind and I love how like Ms Carlson, Ms Painter also infused some new myth into her work. The villain is..gladly not two dimensional like the previous novella. The story is also fast paced, full of action and well written. The chemistry between Claude and Jason while not too sizzling, but believable and not too rushed. The sex level just kissing, a little bit disappointed of course, lol! But with Jason and Claude kinda have a insta love thing, I'm glad with this no sex thing. Queen of Hearts can be stand alone, but too add your enjoyment better to read Aces Wild first so you will get to know more about the Vegas in this series. This series is a series that can't be missed and perfect if you want a quick paranormal romance and UF read with unique world building.

As I said in Amanda's Sin City novella, this is an excellent concept and it is executed well by both Amanda and Kristen. This time we meet Claude who is dragged back in to the collection business, because you never can truly leave it, once they have their claws in to you, you are always a collector. Claude has to go undercover as a magicians assistant in order to capture a jewel thief. But things aren't always as they seem and falling in love wasn't supposed to be on the cards. Claude has to choose between her job (and thereby her life) as the thief's. Its not as easy as it seems. There isn't a dull moment in this series and later in the book we meet a very interesting character Ares, I want to know more about him and I'm hoping Kristen will write a novella around him. This is a great short read for when you don't have time for a proper reading session. If you're like me you'll find the book was too short and you'll be left curious and wanting to read more. The mixture of different supernatural creatures within Vegas makes the series interesting and keeps you coming back for more. If we're lucky maybe someone will even identify who the mysterious boss is later on in the series (heres hoping). I'll be waiting for the next novella to release!

I really enjoyed this novella, it's the second in a multi-author series (the first being Aces Wild by Amanda Carlson) and I am loving this series! This novella centres around Claudette (a semi-retired Collector) and Jason, a gargoyle who's being forced to carry out criminal activity by a sorcerer who has his keystone. I loved Claudette and Jason, the story was fast paced and engrossing! I was routing for them both to get a happy ending! They didn't have the history that the previous couple did but they had a very strong and instant attraction! I like that we get a little epilogue at the end to let us know how their relationship progresses 6 months down the line! I really liked getting that little peek. I was really intrigued by their supernatural types as well, this series so far has featured some less known and used supernatural types alongside the more known ones! I'm very intrigued by a character we met briefly near the end, Aries, a wraith that I hope will get a book of his own! I'm really looking forward to the next in the series Ante Up by Amanda Carlson due out later this month with another contribution from Kristen Painter to follow this year! This is shaping up to be an excellent series and well worth picking up!

Queen of Hearts is the second book in the Sin City Collector’s Series that includes books from both Amanda Carlson and Kristen Painter. In Queen of Hearts we are introduced to Jason and Claudette. Jason is a Gargoyle! I don’t recall ever having read about Gargoyles before, but I do love Gothic architecture, so I’ve always liked Gargoyles. I like the idea of the these characters being so much like stone on the outside, but inside they can be sweeter than North Carolina sweet tea. My only complaint with Queen of Hearts is that it was over so quickly. I have yet to actually be finished reading any of the Sin City Collector’s books when I’ve run out of words. So, it’s not a real complaint, just me wishing there was more, as usual. I seriously love Kristen Painter’s writing style as well as her characters. I think she is very creative in both the way she chooses what the character’s abilities are and how they go about expressing them. I recently read one of Kristen’s other books, House of the Rising Sun, and I’ll say this, the lady can create a world! She has the ability to create and maintain a world in a way that the reader is sucked into and not released until the story is told. I love it! I received a copy of this book for review.

This was my first Kristen Painter novel, and it most certainly won't be my last. This book is refreshing, it's engaging, it's thrilling - it's fabulous. Theatrical and magical, Kristen doesn't fail to entertain. Claudette and Jason were beautiful. Their dialogue was real, flowed with so much passion, I was rooting for them the whole time. Which brings me to Claudette - who in my eyes, is one of the strongest female characters I've read in a long while. Bravo, Kristen, you have earned yourself a new fan. So if you love books that thrill, excite, have sensational romance and sex, a good plot, that's driven by great characters, then this novella is for you. *Please note I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

The plot really was a fun ride with Claudette falling for her target and turning all white knight on him. Of course they fall for each other a bit too quickly, but it can’t be helps with a 100ish pages story. They developed a nice chemistry though and I enjoy it. The introduction of grimalkins and gargoyle was a pretty nifty idea! The conclusion was stressful but once again satisfying and I can’t wait to know who will be featured next and which author will write that story!

This was my first introduction to the world of the Sin City Collectors, and I loved every second of it. The characters were fantastic, the story was thrilling, flirty and flowed right off the page, drawing me in from the very first page. Her instincts were spot on and I was glad that she decided to dig a bit deeper instead of labeling Jason a thief outright. This story was fun and intriguing, but it also had plenty of heart. When the truth about Jason's keystone came to light, my heart broke for him because it left him even more vulnerable to Sloan's demands on him, and couldn't wait to see justice served for what had been done to him. I enjoyed everything about this book. It was a delight to read, and has definitely spurred my interest in the rest of the books in the SCC world. I can't wait to read more.
