Interesting series of short stories that intertwine with each other, covering space/alien/dystopian scenarios, and even some well-known Viking god characters.

There was a large "warrior" type of being who had magical/alien powers to give life-sustaining parts of himself to preserve the life of usually a young girl who was dying while her mother looked on helpless to do anything. Then, when the girl lives we find out the mother is actually the earth mother who has power to save the earth. The warrior type is being pursued either by our government or by alien beings who want to lock him away to keep his powers for good under wraps. This premise is played out in a variety of ways. I really wanted to see another kind of story or two in a "collection".
