I am officially obsessed with this series. The characters are beyond phenomenal and their development seriously amazes me. Jaye is dealing with the tragedy that occurred in book one and she's trying to overcome her fears and to normalize the situation in Bloody Mary. However, nothing is easy as it seems. The first person to greet her in her hometown is a dead body. And later,Jack. *swoon* It's not normal how much I love Jack and how much I ship Jaye and Jack. One of my favourite book pairings! The mystery/crime element is quite good and I really liked finding out more about the Vances and their schemes. And,holy shit, that ending. I most certainly did not expect that! I'll have to start the third book as soon as possible because I can't wait to find out what happens next. Also,my first official 5 star read of 2016.

I knew then that death hadn’t forsaken me when I’d lived this past winter. It was still out to get me, and I’d just looked it in the face. It was still out to get me, and I’d just looked it in the face. Jaye is back in Bloody Mary after being away for a few months. She still feels a bit broken after everything that happened to her in the previous book, add the fact that she’s uncovered more secrets about her parents, and the sudden realisation that there’s more to her and Jack than just being best friends and it’s all made her vulnerable and set on keeping her distance from everyone especially Jack. But upon arrival a gruesome murder makes it impossible for her to keep her distance. And when a second one occurs, she and Jack will have to work together again to stop another murder from happening. I must say it was strange seeing Jaye so broken, so fearful, especially since she wasn’t that way before. For the first half I really missed her dry wit, her sarcasm and toughness. But luckily by the end of the book she seems to have regain her sense of self, letting go of her fears with the help of Jack. “I’ve waited a long time for you. And I’m tired of being patient. It’s my turn to get what I want for once.” I loved Jack in this book, how patient he was with Jaye, knowing she was afraid and overwhelmed. But he also wasn’t hiding his feelings from her anymore and I loved how persistent he was with her, how he wouldn’t allow her to ignore what’s always been there between them, what took her so long to finally see. “It’s just happened really fast. I’m still getting used to it.” “It’s happened over a lifetime, and it won’t be as big of a deal as you think it will. We’ve loved each other forever, whether you’re ready to say it or not.” I absolutely adored the romance in this best friends to lovers’ book. Jaye definitely tried to push Jack away, not knowing how to handle the sudden new feelings she had for him, but luckily Jack knows her so well, and he knew exactly how to handle her skittish behaviour. “That love belongs to me, Jaye. It always has. And you’ve always had mine.” He’s been waiting years for her to see the spark between them and now that she has he refuses to allow her to ignore it, to ignore them and what they had. I loved their romance and how beautiful it was when they finally gave into their feelings. The suspenseful plot was terrific and so damn gripping trying to figure out who the killer/s were and once again I was surprised to find out who it was. And the secrets that Jaye uncovered about her parents just added more intrigue and I can’t wait to find out more about that. She gave us both a shrewd look. “Looks like you’ve been assisting him in unofficial capacities as well. I miss sex,” she said with a sigh. “It’s one of the many things that sucks about getting old.” I really love this town that is definitely starting to live up to its scary name, Bloody Mary, and although some of the towns people with their small mindedness made me want to shake some sense into them, there were also those I loved. Like Miss Pilcher, who is as old as dirt but so freaking funny! She likes watching porn and when that bores her she spies on her neighbors with her long-range binoculars, lol! I want to be her when I grow up ;-D I am REALLY loving this excellent series. The plot is full of intrigue, suspense and twists and the romance simply wonderful. A must read for all RS fans!

In A Dirty Shame, we learn more about J.J.'s parents and there is some satisfying romancing going on. I'm not going to add more to that comment, because I don't want to spoil it for new readers. I'm not going to add more to that comment, because I don't want to spoil it for new readers. J.J. is literally driving back into town after months of isolated recovery at her parent's Poconos cabin, when she makes a horrific discovery. And just like that she is back in her groove, running a funeral home, performing as the coroner, verbally sparring with Jack and avoiding his flirty innuendos and any other emotional contact as well, and pretending the harsh judgement of half the town does not bother her. When the apparent hate crime has ties to one of their best friends, Jack and J.J. are emotionally caught up in the investigation, even as their own emotions are now out in the open. I really love their relationship. Jack is supremely confident and insightful, and understands J.J. better than anyone. And she in turn trusts and loved him unconditionally as well. She has just never in emotions and relationships before because of her family and family history. Jack and J.J.'s teasing and flirting is witty, sexy and smart - some of the best dialogue I have read in a very long time. The sex scenes are hot, intense and hubba-hubba worthy without being very graphic. The setting of this series is a small southern town with a lot of personality. Bloody Mary is a small town, full of Victorian-style houses that populate the brick-lined streets, which are named for the dead wives of Henry VIII. The population is a mixture of rich and poor, black and white, local and non-local. And much like the small town I grew up in, local means at least 2nd generation. Living there for 25+ years still makes you the new guy. As interesting as the town is, the author doesn't indulge in too much quirkiness other than street names, and the interesting locals feel normally interesting and nuts, not "quaint and colorful". If you like the TV show "Bones" you will love this series. There are a lot of similarities - the gritty, violent mystery, the smart verbal sparring of the two romantic leads, and the sexy personal relationship that spills over into their shared worklife.

There is definitely more romance going on in this instalment but it’s never cheesy and the constant banter & fun dialogues between Jaye and Jack make it less overwhelming. The romance also helps lighten up some of the more gruesome aspects of the murder investigation. The mystery about J.J. and her parents keep building up as corpses keep piling up in Bloody Mary. The plot is well-built and fast-paced, with some very nice twists that never fail to take the reader by surprise. A very enjoyable, entertaining read. Can’t wait to read the next instalment!

In book two we find JJ and Jack working on another series of murders that seem to be related to a hate crime. Surrounding this main theme, we see JJ coming to teams with what happened to her in book 1, her path to healing is a rough one, and a bit quick(especially if you don't take the "12" weeks she spent away from Bloody Mary into account). Jack remains lovable & supportive though her process, and by the end of the book he has declared his love to JJ ,furthering the romantic theme of the books. The story is well written, and does have some humor, just not as much as the first book had. Interlaced with the murder plot we get more of JJ’s back story, and glimpses into why Jack is the sheriff in Bloody Mary (more info on this appears in book three) The author does a good job tying all the of the plots threads together, and ends the book with a big surprise. It was this ending that drove me directly into book 3, as I really needed to know what was going to happen. For me this was a strong 4 star read, the themes and references in the book, being so real, they could be found in the pages of any American newspaper.

I swear, this series gets better and better. J.J. Graves is such a complex character, especially now. The events of book 1 profoundly affected her, and J.J. has returned to Bloody Mary after a four month sabbatical following her near murder. She has barely crossed the town limits when she encounters a murder. And, just like that, she's thrust right back into a role she's not sure she's ready for yet. The events of book 1 profoundly affected her, and J.J. has returned to Bloody Mary after a four month sabbatical following her near murder. Jack is happy to see her and not willing to let any more time go by before he tells her how he really feels about her. You know - not to complicate things any further. I love that Liliana Hart has made J.J. so flawed. She was nearly strangled to death in her own house. That will absolutely mess with your head in life-changing ways. Her voice is permanently damaged. She's jumpy and carries a gun everywhere now. She doesn't like being touched, even by those she has known and loved her whole life. She can't step foot in the house she grew up in. She can't sleep more than an hour or so at a time. J.J. is forever changed and she doesn't know how to move forward. The decision is taken out of her hands when she comes across an apparent hate crime on her way back into town. She's the first person on the scene, and her old instincts kick in. As in book 1, I really enjoyed the scenes where J.J. gets to don her many caps. In Bloody Mary, she's the medical examiner, the coroner and the mortician. She's like the dead whisperer, and it appears that her new phobias haven't hindered her ability to do her job. With each new dead body that shows up in this new case, J.J. cuts each one open with ease to determine how, when at with what he or she was killed. Jack, J.J.'s BFF since grade school, is very happy to see her back in town. We got an inkling of Jack's true feelings for her at the end of book 1, and in A Dirty Rotten Shame, Jack lays it all out for her. His way of dealing with J.J. is uniquely perfect. Jack knows she's been through a lot, and because of his time on both the SWAT team and the local police force, I think Jack has had some opportunity to deal with sensitive situations. It's like he knew just what to do and say to J.J. to make her comfortable at least around him. Jack was infinitely patient and sweet. And yet, he never coddled her. He let her be afraid, but also let her know he was there for her and he was never leaving. It was exactly what she needed. The romance between Jack and J.J. was perfectly paced. Given J.J.'s new hang-ups, it didn't happen too soon. Jack definitely had to get her used to the idea that he's in love with her and has been for years. How he did that was so completely and utterly perfect. The other thing I loved about this book is, even after Jack declares his feelings, the snarky banter that is hallmark for these two doesn't stop. Yes J.J. has been through something awful and the nature of the crimes in this book is pretty heinous. But, Liliana Hart writes in these perfect one-line zingers, and creates these colorful side characters that bring much needed levity and hilarity to an otherwise dark and foreboding book. Liliana Hart is a master at weaving a complex web. Just when you think you know who did it, that person is ruled out. There are twists and turns and moments that had me biting my nails. It was awesome and exciting. And the bomb that is dropped at the very end will leave you begging for more right away. Once again, I listened to the audio version of A Dirty Rotten Shame. Laura Faye Smith narrates this series perfectly. She really captures Jack and J.J. exactly how I picture them. If you love crime and mystery dramas with a hint of romance, this series is one you should definitely check out.

After the ending of book #1, J.J.'s world was pretty much shattered and she's been in hiding and away from Bloody Mary and Jack in the months since. This story starts with her coming home, hitting the city limits and finding a mutilated body as she comes into town. Nothing like being thrown right back into work and Jack with no time to adjust. And that's a problem for J.J. because she's still reeling from the events that happened months before. While she's still in shock though, it's just solidified things for Jack....he's in love with her and it's time for her to simply accept it. *sigh* I love how absolutely sure he is of them and their love. Jack's character is amazing!! This story twists all over the place as J.J. and Jack are once again trying to track down a murderer. The clues are leading everywhere but through it all the amazing part of this particular book for me was the new relationship between Jack and JJ. They've always been best friends so watching slip into something more was fabulous. I love how real JJ feels. She is so scared of this...so scared of screwing it all up. She adores Jack and that terrifies her because her life hasn't been a happy one. For her, loving him means a guarantee that she's just going to lose him. But at this point, she simply can't resist him anymore. Even though she's sure it's going to end, she goes into it all planning to enjoy it while she can so she can have the memories to savor for later. *sigh* My heart just aches for her. I love this ongoing series and the cliffhanger KILLED ME!! Seriously, I was vacuuming when the audio ended and stopped in the middle of the room to go buy book #3....thank goodness it was already out, even if it wasn't in audio yet.

Little nuances bug me, for example, there is a comment about three deaths, and it almost became four. A writer should know her own work. In the last book, it was actually four murders, and one attempted murder. Need to keep track of little details like that. Also, the part about the military KIAs really bugged me. They are not prepped by private funeral homes. They are prepped at Dover Air Force base. Fact check, please. ... and the Mystery continues This was a great follow-up to Dirty Little Secrets. This story continues to build and we learn more about JJ Graves. The mystery continues to build as they solve the deaths of three local Bloody Mary residents. We learn more about JJ's past, but still not her first name... and at the end there is a surprise. I'm not sure how JJ will react and the author will keep us guessing until book 3 Dirty Rotten Scoundrel is released!

DIRTY SHAME Well damn.... Jaye and Jack are back on the case. Jaye starts out a little lost in this story. She doesn't know what to make of her past and she is hesitate about the future. Thank God for Jack. He was there for Jaye as her best friend and other half. The case has so many twist and turns. There were so many moving parts and so many people that were up to no good. I can't for the next mystery. The town of Blood Mary holds so much in the ways of murder.

So much unfolds as this story progresses and ties together several murders with one very unsuspecting accomplice. The last sentence of the book literally took my breath away, and I cannot wait for Dirty Rotten Scoundrel to be released 11/5/2013 to see what happens!!! 

I'll give this instalment of the J.J. Graves series three and a half stars. The mystery, the action, the denouement, and the ending were really interesting. I liked the plotline a lot, and the side story of Jaye's family is going to get even more fascinating, I think! I may be in the minority here, but the corny romance and sexual antics of the characters deter from the book for me. A little of that goes a long way. I would have given it more stars if not for the romance being so unrealistic and s I'll give this instalment of the J.J. Graves series three and a half stars. I will read the next instalment because of my interest in the back story, with the story ending on a cliffhanger, but parts of this one were really difficult to stomach.

This was a great book that moved along quickly and had the right amount of mystery, action, and romance! This is the second in the series and did not let me down from the first one. It's interesting to see how J.J. Graves goes through the motions and steps and the author does a good job of making you feel what JJ feels as she goes through it all. Can't wait to read the third! Gripping and well written. The dilemmas that Jaye faces are well revealed and explored. The dialogue in this series is excellently crafted, especially that between the two main characters Jaye and Jack. Their romance has a lightening effect on the rather gruesome nature of the storyline. But the processes of detection and forensics are fascinating. I really like the characterisation, especially of Jaye who is strong but bears the scars and weaknesses of her family history. I see there are two mo Gripping and well written. I see there are two more novels in the series, and I fear that I will get no sleep until I've read them all!

4.50 / 5 Stars I've really enjoyed this murder mystery/romance series. Liked the banter between J.J. and Jack. Even when she's unsure about their relationship (for various reasons) Jack is, and is more straight forward about his feelings and what he wants. I also enjoy the joking between Jack and his FBI friend, Carver. Felt I knew one of the players within this murder mystery, but not the one behind it all. The story kept me interested throughout. However, I wasn't expecting that ending!
