This short account of a girl and her family and friend takes place during the infamous Johnstown Flood when the dam breaks. It has a choose-your-own-adventure style to it with three alternate endings. It is a brutal in places and shows that people struggled and died in this flood, so more sensitive young ones might steer away, but given the subject matter, that isn't surprising. I am not a big fan of the gimmicky three-choice ending. All readers feel- at times- like they would like to go back and rewrite an ending that kicks them in the gut, but the actual ability to do so takes away from the book's effect and then none of the endings feel real.

A family prepares for the heavy rain, special treasures are moved from the basement. Dad has to go to work on the train, it's a situation of "all hands on deck." Mom does allow Sarah Beth to go out and buy lace and thread so she can finish a dress she is sewing for a client. (Not sure that makes sense.) Sarah Beth and her friend Vincent have some experiences they'd rather forget. This time the damn won't hold. Fairly simple story, with 3 different endings.
