When Gabe Callan left the FBI to start his own security business, he thought he knew who he was and where he was headed. Turned out he didn’t know himself at all. Fortunately, his wife (now ex) forgave him. Together they run Callan Securities, and in the little free time he has, well, one-night stands are good enough. Then Nathan Graves walks in. Fortunately, his wife (now ex) forgave him. Together they run Callan Securities, and in the little free time he has, well, one-night stands are good enough. Then Nathan Graves walks in. Nathan is a philanthropist and entrepreneur. He’s not a saint. As soon as he met Gabe, he knew he wanted more than just protection from the man. But they’re going to have two weeks in Rio to get to know each other better. A whole lot better, if Nathan has anything to say about it. Except nothing ever goes to plan, and the two end up chased through the slums of one of the most glamorous cities on Earth, hiding from drug lords in the very shacks and hovels Nathan had come to replace. Getting to know each other better will have to take a back seat to getting home alive.

A surprisingly disappointing offering from an author who's been on my auto-buy list because of her Creatures of Sin series. There isn't any chemistry between the MCs nor any push-pull in their interaction. Nathan makes his wants clear right from the start - rather gauche, IMO. After all, Gabe owns a private security firm, not an escort service. Hmm, okay. Callan Securities does provide escort services but not the type Nathan is expecting to be included in the contract. After all, Gabe owns a private security firm, not an escort service. Hmm, okay. Callan Securities does provide escort services but not the type Nathan is expecting to be included in the contract. You would think this alone would provide some enjoyment, right? That Nathan would be this I'm-rich-so-suck-my-cock jerk and we sit back and watch how our other MC deals with this, right? Wrong. Nathan is a nice, boring guy and Gabe is a nice and boring guy, too. His ex-wife runs the business with him and she's efficient, his best friend and caring about her ex-husband's sex life is part of her job. I did not get the feel that she was being set up for her own book as Chris seems to think. To me, she was there in the "loyal secretary" role and will continue to feature in the sequels, if there are any and no, I won't be buying. I didn't get the sense of danger that would necessitate Nathan requiring Gabe's services even though it was a valid one. I could easily buy into the premise that Nathan's plans to build cheap, simple but decent housing for the poor of Rio would incur the displeasure of the gangs whose livelihood depends on keeping the populace poor and helpless. Oh so much here to work on! But instead, the entire book is nothing but a lacklustre account of Nathan wanting Gabe and Gabe pretending to say No. Whatever little suspense that came about to justify Nathan's need for a bodyguard was mere lip service. Add to that the sort-of villain and Blood on the Mountain was a bit of an insult to my senses. The only thing that got my attention was how Nathan got into Gabe's bedroom. Gabe asks him that and when Nathan replies he got in through the connecting door, Gabe tells him it's a deadbolt and this enquiry is left unanswered. Not important at all to the plot - which is my point - but that was the only thing that registered and throughout the whole story, I couldn't get it out of my head: how did Nathan get in Gabe's hotel room? It reminded me of an MF romance I read back in the early 90s by either Catherine Coulter or Sandra Brown. All that registered to this day is that the author described the heroine as having inch-long nipples. Honey, those are called teats.

Rio de Janeiro is the setting for the story but not the Rio that first comes to mind. This story takes the reader into the favelas or slums of Rio where philanthropist and entrepreneur Nathan Graves plans to rebuild the favelas with small but very affordable housing. It's a risky and dangerous venture so Nathan hires Callahan Securities which is owned by a retired FBI agent, Gabe, and his ex-wife to protect him on a visit to Rio. There's an attraction between Gabe and Nathan so Gabe tries his damnedest to avoid accompanying Nathan to Rio but he's the best suited agent. Once in the favela, the two men are caught up in the middle of a drug cartel uprising and are forced into hiding until the police can calm things down and Gabe and Nathan can sneak back to their hotel. The playful teasing between Nathan and Gabe was fun to read and they made a great couple with each vying for control in and out of the sheets. I loved the good relationship that Gabe and Jeannie had though I wonder how many women would be that understanding. The battle in the favela was well drawn and kept the suspense going for me. The entire story flowed very well with the focus on the growing relationship between Nathan and Gabe at the core of the story. The HEA ending was a foregone conclusion but was still satisfying. I'd recommend this quick read to anyone looking for a sexy suspense story. You won't be disappointed.

After a string of books with one strong and one weaker man with a care relationship, I was ready for some strong manly man book. Blood on the Mountain by author duo India Harper gave me just that. Blood on the Mountain is the story of Nathan Graves, philanthropist and entrepreneur with a new housing project that leads him to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The favelas aren’t exactly the safest place on earth and it leads him to Gabe Callan, security expert. The sparks fly as soon as the two meet and Nathan isn’t shy about what he wants either. Everything is well…erh…hot as hell literally and figuratively. Right until the bullets start to fly. This is a fantastic short read. Well worked out with a fine cast of characters. Nathan and Gabe are their own men. They are strong, independent and are secure in what they want and need and not afraid to show it either. That’s what I liked about these characters most, even though this is a short story. They are very different from each other, but each brings something unique to this book. These are not your typical stock characters. The mystery is secondary to the developing relationship and fuck-fest, but what little there was, was well placed. There’s more to it and I think there might just be a sequel that expands on the mystery started here. If not, then I’ll be a little disappointed because there was no real end to it. Blood on the Mountain is a good romantic suspense story where sparks fly of the pages and the main characters get in some interesting situations both in and out of the favelas. Not to mention, you want to know what Nathan can do with his mouth and a condom!

Good m/m romantic suspense about a security firm co-owner who goes to Rio to protect a client doing nonprofit work there. This ended with plenty of unanswered questions, although I fear the sequel might be m/f, featuring the other (female) co-owner of the security firm.
