This isn't the sort of book I'd gravitate towards, but my husband gave it to me in my Christmas stocking---something he'd found in a used book store he thought might pique my interest since we've both seen every episode of House at least twice, and maybe more. Published in 2011, it's likely that much of the medical information is out of date, but even so, I enjoyed the references to shows I remembered and the author's relating of facts and statistics (the latter also likely to be out of date). It was also interesting to read how, even when we "know" House could never exist in the real world, the public impression of the medical system, insurance companies, and the like, are influenced by what we watch. I was also impressed by Holtz's presentation, and judging by the number of references listed at the back of the book, his research. Equally enjoyable (at least to me) is that it's the sort of book you can pick up, read a chapter, and leave for a week or more without forgetting who-did-what-when. An entertaining read for fans of the TV series without any medical knowledge whatsoever. Doctors, nurses (and insurance companies) may disagree! 3.5 stars.

I'm a big fan of House. As a medical student, by watching House sometimes helped me in a way to learn something about medicine. Although it is not 100% that you will learn about the disease and all the stuffs related to medicine but at least when you encounter a situation like that, you can always relate it with House (in some cases I think). So this book is about some of the issues that real doctors encounter; which in real life they are not really much like how they are being potrayed in House I'm a big fan of House. Well, medical dramas make us feel like we know something about a world-the world of medicine but how far do you know about this world? For example, this book has discussed about the ethics in medicine which we really much acknowledged that Dr Gregory House was lack of it. It also has discussed about mistakes that the doctors do and how to encounter it, how to break the bad news to the patients(just to name a few..) and many more. It is an eye-opener for me into this whole medical world. Like for example, I really love how the author had discussed on delivering bad news to the patients. In reality, doctors do make mistakes. When it happens, what's the best way to tell the patient or family? Anyway, House was one hell of the amazing shows! So to all House fans out there, I highly recommend this book to all of you! :)

Not a debunking of House and its strange cases, but an illumination of how doctors, hospitals and health care work in America. Holtz says you'll rarely find a House today. It's not only that House-like doctors can get sanctioned for violating regulations. It is more likely that the well-being of a patient is the culmination of informed choices, health care and the collective effort of doctors and specialists. Yes, House is still fascinating. Interesting book with good insights into medical science. However not much focus on the show itself and does get slightly political. Some of the health care reform information/debates in the book are a bit out of date now. Overall an enjoyable read.

My daughter knows my addiction to House so this was an interesting insight into House and other medical shows versus reality, public perception, and what we can do to make them work better together.
