My oldest and I have been using the Portraits of American Girlhood book for our main curriculum this year. This study goes through each of the 6-volume sets of the American Girl books Felicity, Josephina, Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Addy, and Kit. This study goes through each of the 6-volume sets of the American Girl books Felicity, Josephina, Kirsten, Samantha, Molly, Addy, and Kit. I love this study because I actually enjoy reading the American Girl books with her, and that's saying a lot! I have always hated history and found it extremely tedious and boring! I truly believe that if I'd been taught differently growing up in the public school system, I wouldn't be such a reluctant teacher in this area. What I love about them is that they give you plenty of information about what was happening during that time period, from important political figures to events that shaped our country, but they do it in an easy-to-read and understand story. Each American Girl learns about what is going on around here right along with the reader, and they each face their own triumphs and disappointments. Each book demonstrates and reinforces moral concepts and values such as honesty, loyalty, courage, and faith. The books themselves are wonderful and I was so excited to find the Portraits of American Girlhood curriculum to help make our school year more exciting and encouraging. It contains six 6-week unit studies (with an optional 7th) that cover a lot of material with a heavy focus on language arts. Your child will be encouraged to think and empathize with the American Girl characters and the book is packed with lots of ideas to bring the historical fiction to life and relate to it in modern society. The beauty of this book is that you can make it as simple or elaborate as you wish; do just the written activities or go all-out and dress up in historically accurate clothing while practicing narration or recitation! I hope to share some of the projects and activities we do as we finish up the book in the next couple of months. So if your daughter loves the American Girl books, I encourage you to give Portraits of American Girlhood a try. I wish that we could continue this study longer than just this year!
