A wealthy American businessman is murdered in his English manor house, his head blown off by a double-barrelled shotgun - whodunit and why? The Valley of Fear is one of the better Sherlock Holmes stories but it’s still a fairly mediocre read. It’s a fine story of revenge and intrigue full of American gangsters and Freemasons (like A Study in Scarlet, Arthur Conan Doyle clearly viewed the United States as a romantically dangerous country full of rogues!), and the mystery is well put-together. The Holmes stories always lose me in their weak execution though. It’s always characters sat in rooms monologuing at length, page after page, while the action is almost always in the past tense; the frequently static narrative never makes for an exciting read as a result. The ending to this book is also a bit unsatisfying in that, with the first mentions of Professor Moriarty, Holmes’ shadowy nemesis, it feels like you’re reading the first act to a story that doesn’t have a second. And, like in all of these comics adaptations, INJ Culbard’s overly cartoony art style is a terrible pairing for the dramatic material. The Valley of Fear is a decent mystery but I found the old-fashioned pacing made for a less than thrilling reading experience - I couldn’t takes it, I tells ya! The original Sherlock Holmes stories are definitely outdated and are more quaint curiosities than anything else.

I think this is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes book and while I did not read this edition I still thought it was really good and the plot twists were some of the best that I’ve read because you thought you knew something and then pew it’s changed I could of rated this book 5 stars but a ) I’m mean and b) the Epiloge is completely pointless and makes the reading of 5his book seem like a waste - like really why? But I did really enjoy this book once it got going do yeah it’s quite good

Sherlock investigates the murder of an English gentleman in an old castle home. This story did not grasp my interest and I had to restart it several times. In the end, I had to skim to finish it. I think I prefer sherlock in his original format...

This Sherlock Holmes graphic novel grabbed my attention while I was helping the hubby find graphic novels at the library. Since I love Holmes and mysteries and needed another library book to help me wrap up the I Love Library Books Challenge, it seemed like it really needed to come home with me. Since I love Holmes and mysteries and needed another library book to help me wrap up the I Love Library Books Challenge, it seemed like it really needed to come home with me. Graphic novels aren't my favorite medium for reading, but I have to say that they do help one quickly add another notch to the reading belt. The Valley of Fear is loosely based on real events in late 19th Century America featuring Pinkerton agents, the coal mining district of Pennsylvania, and the Molly Maguires. Holmes is sent an coded message from an informant in Moriarty's gang warning him--too late--of impending danger to one John Douglas of Birlstone. The Great Detective has just deciphered the warning when Inspector Alec MacDonald of Scotland Yard comes calling to ask his help in the death of Douglas. The murder is an early version of the English country house mystery--complete with faithful butler and an apparently impossible crime. Douglas's home is surrounded by a moat and has a drawbridge--which, when closed, makes the house fairly inaccessible. There are clues that point to an intruder, but Holmes soon sees that appearances may be a bit misleading. Ian Edginton and I. N. J. Culbard give the reader the familiar story by Doyle in an easy to follow format. It is a very quick and enjoyable read that manages to cover the story's highlights and present them in a very entertaining manner--particularly to those who may not wish to read standard texts. My one complaint? Holmes looks more like Superman than the Holmes I picture. He's drawn with firm, bold strokes, giving him a very square-jawed, superhero look. Not that Holmes can't seem a bit super-human with his deductive powers, but I don't care to have images of capes and bodysuits in mind rather than greatcoats and deerstalkers.
